Multiple graded stakes winner Chatalas makes her 4-year-old debut and returns to her preferred surface when she starts in the $100,000 La Canada Stakes (G3) Jan. 19 at Santa Anita Park. The 1 1/16-mile La Canada for older fillies and mares was rescheduled and redrawn for Sunday after Santa Anita moved its California Cup card, originally slated for Jan. 11, to Jan. 18 as a result of the Southern California wildfires.
Trained by Mark Glatt, Chatalas captured the 2023 Chandelier Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita as a 2-year-old before embarking on a cross-country 3-year-old campaign. She scored a hard-earned victory in the 2024 Indiana Oaks (G3) in her first start from a seven-month layoff and finished her sophomore season with mixed results in stakes company. In her most recent effort, the Gun Runner filly finished a disappointing eighth in the American Oaks (G1T) on the turf.
Chatalas reunites with jockey Antonio Fresu for the La Canada, who has partnered the filly to her two graded stakes wins.
In addition to facing seasoned older stakes mares Alpha Bella and Musical Mischief, Chatalas' biggest opposition could come from the lightly raced Bob Baffert-trained Cavalieri. The 4-year-old Nyquist filly has been flawless in two starts for Speedway Stables, both coming at the mile distance. She recorded a 97 Equibase Speed Figure in her latest performance; a 3 1/2-length romp against older fillies in a first-level October allowance contest at Santa Anita.
Juan Hernandez has the call aboard Cavalieri in her stakes unveiling.
