Voters in the National Thoroughbred Racing Association top 3-year-old poll agree that Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner Journalism should be the 3-1 morning-line favorite for the Kentucky Derby (G1) as the son of Curlin tops the final edition of that poll ahead of the year's opening classic.
The big change in the 3-year-old poll this week is Florida Derby (G1) winner Tappan Street falling from third to sixth following an injury in his final Derby workout that knocked him out of the race. Following Journalism in the poll are Arkansas Derby (G1) winner Sandman and Florida Derby runner-up Sovereignty.
Filly Good Cheer, the 6-5 favorite in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) May 2 at Churchill Downs is tied for ninth in the poll. The other nine horses in the top 3-year-old poll are all entered in the Derby May 3 at Churchill.
Many of the horses in the NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll also will be in action May 2 and 3 at Churchill on the Oaks and Derby undercards. Reigning Horse of the Year Thorpedo Anna sits atop the poll. She's entered in the La Troienne Stakes (G1) Friday at Churchill. Also on that card will be a showdown between Locked (No. 3 in the poll) and Fierceness (tied for ninth in the poll) in the Alysheba Stakes (G2).
