The market at the Hidaka Breeders Association Selection Sale of Yearlings at Shizunai July 21-23 was not as strong as the Japan Racing Horse Association Select Sale the previous week. The results were solid with an average price of ¥18,636,364 (approx, US$126,365) and a median of ¥16 million (approx. US$108,489); resulting in a 6.7% and 17.4% increase from 2024, respectively. A total of 308 lots were sold from 363 offered with a clearance rate of 84.9%, similar to last year's 85.1%.
The format of the auction changed this year, with a dark day July 22. The catalog was also smaller than in years past. The sale grossed ¥5.74 billion (approx. US$38.9 million), which is a 20.3% decline from last year when 412 lots were sold for ¥7,197,600,000 in total.
Hip 45, a Kitasan Black colt consigned by Sakai Bokujo, was bought by Wiseman for ¥88 million (approx. US$596,691) to top the session. He is the second foal out of Secondary Market by leading sire Into Mischief . Secondary Market was trained by Chad Brown, winning two of her eight career starts with a notable fourth in the Prioress Stakes (G2). She was bought at the 2021 Keeneland November Sale for $190,000.
Kitasan Black proved to be popular at the HBA Selection Sale, where 12 yearlings by the son of Black Tide were offered and all of them found their new owners. They averaged ¥39,833,333 (approx. US$270,093).
The next sale at Shizunai is the HBA Summer Yearling Sale, which will be held Aug. 18-23; 1,462 yearlings are cataloged.
