Team Hanley and Parkland Thoroughbreds' Icy Storm became the first winner for Calumet Farm stallion Keen Ice  May 3 when the colt took a five-furlong maiden special weight on dirt at Indiana Grand Race Course for trainer Steve Asmussen.

Ridden by Jermaine Bridgmohan, Icy Storm broke well and chased the pace two wide on the turn, then made an early run for the leader, Gormleys Got Game, at the top of the lane. The colt grabbed the lead in the final sixteenth and kept his head down to the wire, holding off a late challenge from Atta Boy Anthony to win by a neck in 1:00.81 on a track rated good.

Bred in Kentucky by Calumet Farm, Icy Storm is out of the Pioneerof the Nile mare Downton My Lady. His one career victory from his lone start brings his earnings to $18,600.

Keen Ice is a 9-year-old son of Curlin  who enjoyed some success at 2 running for Donegal Racing and trainer Dale Romans. He broke his maiden in his second lifetime start and was third in the Remsen Stakes (G2).

At 3, Keen Ice won or placed in four graded stakes, capped by his defeat of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah  in the Travers Stakes (G1). At 4, he was moved to Todd Pletcher during the season and was third in the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1). At 5, he won the Suburban Stakes (G2) and was runner-up in the Whitney Stakes (G1) and Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes (G1). Keen Ice retired with a 3-4-5 record from 24 starts and earnings of $3,407,245.

Keen Ice entered stud at Calumet Farm in 2018 and stands 2021 for a fee of $9,500.
