The first reported foal by Crestwood Farm stallion Caracaro was born Jan. 14 at Dr. Gilberto Lopez's Giraluna Stables near Ocala. The colt's dam is stakes producer Real Ruffian.
Real Ruffian (Ghostzapper ) is out of multiple stakes winner No Foul Play (Great Gladiator), who also produced graded stakes winner Temporary Saint. Her first foal, First Illusion (Plan), became stakes placed at Gulfstream Park.
Caracaro, bred by SF Bloodstock, is by Uncle Mo out of the War Front mare Peace Time, the dam of three black-type horses. His second dam is grade 2 winner, multiple grade 1-placed Santa Catarina (Unbridled), the 2003 Kentucky Oaks (G1) runner-up.
Gustavo Delgado trained Caracaro for owners Global Thoroughbred and Top Racing. In January of his 3-year-old season, Caracaro broke his maiden by six lengths at Gulfstream. He was then second to eventual grade 1 winner Country Grammer in the Peter Pan Stakes (G3), ahead of eventual Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline (G1) Mystic Guide , and was second again in the Runhappy Travers Stakes (G1) to Tiz the Law , ahead of another eventual grade 1 winner in Max Player . That was Caracaro's final start.
He earned $238,800 from a 1-3-0 record in four starts after being acquired for $95,000 by Global Thoroughbred when consigned by Buckland Sales to the 2017 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.
Caracaro stands for an advertised fee of $6,500 at Crestwood in 2022.
