With plans to revive both the Cradle Stakes and Bassinet Stakes Sept. 2 at Belterra Park Gaming and Entertainment Center, the races will no longer run according to Belterra racing secretary Bill Couch.
Slotted for 1 1/16 miles over the turf, this year would have marked the first appearance for both races since 2010.
"The timing of the Cradle and Bassinet were set originally for Labor Day weekend," Couch said. "Due to venues surrounding our location having decided to write 2-year-old races/stakes and allowances for significant more purses, we have decided to reevaluate and use that purse money for overnight purses."
Previously known as River Downs, the track changed names in 2011 after it was purchased by Pinnacle Entertainment. It was sold again to Boyd Gaming in 2018, who purchased the property for $57.7 million.
The first running of the Cradle took place in 1977 with notable past winners, including 1985 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Spend a Buck, Harlan's Holiday, and Peaks and Valleys.
In 2001, the Bassinet was sponsored by Pepsi of Cincinnati for $100,000, making it the richest race for 2-year-old fillies in Ohio.
Multiple graded stakes winner Caressing, who was Eclipse Award champion 2-year-old filly in 2000, won the Bassinet in her third start that same year. She is the dam of West Coast, who earned $5,803,800 from 13 starts, and saw wins in the Travers Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (G1) and the Pennsylvania Derby (G1), both in 2017.
