Steve Asmussen was all in as the owner and trainer of the first winner for Darby Dan Farm's freshman sire Copper Bullet , a filly named Copper Kan who won her second career start June 16 at Lone Star Park.
Bryan Henderson bred Copper Kan in Texas out of the Kantharos stakes winner Wildwood Kantharos. The filly was offered at the Texas Thoroughbred Association April 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale where she sold for $15,000 to KDE Equine from the Diamond C Racing consignment.
Copper Kan debuted May 28 at Lone Star Park, where she finished third in a 4 1/2-furlong maiden special weight. Then came her race Friday, which she won by 1 1/4 lengths with five furlongs in 1:00.70.
Wildwood Kantharos now has two winners and placed performers from three foals to race. She delivered a filly this year by El Deal.
Copper Bullet, an 8-year-old son of More Than Ready, won the 2017 Saratoga Special Stakes (G2) and was runner-up in the Bashford Manor Stakes (G3) and Razorback Handicap (G3) for Winchell Thoroughbreds and Willis Horton Racing.
Owner Ron Winchell teamed up with Dr. David Lambert's Equine Analysis Systems to identify qualified mares for Copper Bullet's first book. If a mare met Lambert's criteria, the season was complimentary and the mare owner was paid $5,000 when confirmed in foal at 45 days.
Copper Bullet stands at Darby Dan near Lexington for an advertised fee of $7,500.
