Claiborne Farm posted a collection of photos to social media Sept. 1, documenting the arrival and burial of the remains of Hall of Fame racehorse Ruffian at the legendary Paris, Ky., horse farm.
Late last month her remains were transported from the base of the flagpole near the finish line at Belmont Park, where she had been buried since her death in 1975. Ruffian's remains join others at Claiborne's Marchmont Cemetery, the final resting place of many prominent sires, racehorses, and broodmares.
The move was needed as the New York Racing Association is beginning the installation of a one-mile synthetic track.
Bred by Stuart Janney Jr. and his wife, Barbara Phipps Janney, owners of Locust Hill Farm in Glyndon, Md., Ruffian was sired by Reviewer out of the Native Dancer mare Shenanigans. Ruffian won all 10 races she finished during her two-year racing career, among them five grade 1s.
Ruffian is home. Rest easy beautiful girl ❤️🤍

Huge thank you to Mr. Janney and @thenyra for preserving and transporting Ruffian in the most respectful manner imaginable, and for giving us the opportunity to lay her to rest where her life began. pic.twitter.com/pel2YQDLN7
