Philip Oliver, beloved husband, brother, and son, died Feb. 19, in Indiantown, Fla. He was born June 6, 1970, in Chipping Norton, England, to his loving mother and father, Alison and Alan Oliver.
Phil grew up in Chipping Norton and began riding at the age of 3. Prior to moving to the United States at the age of 18, He worked for champion jump jockeys and trainers Stan Miller and Lester Piggott. Phil began his U.S. training career as an assistant with Ian Jory at Santa Anita Park. Phil was instrumental in the training and development of Video Ranger and Best Pal.
His next stop was as an assistant trainer with Bruce Headley, where he worked with champion racehorse Bertrando. Phil's final assistant role, before taking his trainer's license, came with Elliott Walden, where they conditioned Menifee, Victory Gallop, and Distorted Humor, which is where he met his bride-to-be Vicki.
In 1999, Phil launched his career as a trainer. He would become a grade 1 and multiple graded stakes trainer campaigning notable horses such as Autonomy, Closing Range, First Lieutenant, Last Full Measure, and Middie. Oliver saddled 1,324 starters with a record of 153-171-167 and earnings of $6,167,528.
Along with his career with horses, he was an avid reader and had a passion for hunting and his dogs.
Philip was a kind and compassionate soul, known for his warm smile and humor. He touched the lives of many with his charismatic personality. His departure leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Victoria Oliver, his brother Chris Oliver, his sister Toni Blinkhorn, and his mother Alison Oliver. Philip was preceded in death by his father, Alan Oliver.
In his lifetime, Philip Oliver made a lasting impact on those around him, leaving behind a legacy of love, compassion, and kindness. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his soul rest in peace, and his memory continue to inspire and guide us in the years to come.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held in Lexington in April on a date to be determined shortly. Donations can be made to Dunklin Memorial Church or The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation.
