Mensa became the first winner for first-crop sire Complexity  by dashing to a front-running three-length victory in a $62,700 maiden race for juveniles April 12 at Gulfstream Park.

The D. J. Stable-owned colt, trained by Hall of Famer Mark Casse and ridden by Patrick Husbands, sped 4 1/2 furlongs in :51.86 after setting fractions of :22.07 and :45.66. He paid $10 to win. All seven participants in the race were first-time starters.

Bred in Florida by Beth Bayer, Mensa is out of the Medaglia d'Oro  mare Lady Halite. The colt was a $135,000 purchase from the 2023 Ocala Breeders' October Yearling Sale from her breeder's consignment.

Mensa was just the second starter for Complexity, whose first runner, Tuxedo Park, finished second in an April 10 maiden race at Keeneland.

Complexity, an 8-year-old son of Maclean's Music  trained by Chad Brown for Klaravich Stables, won five of 10 starts and $616,350, with his most prestigious victory coming in the one-mile Champagne Stakes (G1) in 2018. Later in his career, he added another stakes victory at that distance at Belmont Park when he won the 2020 Kelso Handicap (G2) in 1:33.82.

He entered stud the following year at Airdrie Stud in Central Kentucky, where he now stands for $12,500.

Out of the Yes It's True mare Goldfield, Complexity is a half brother to grade 3 winner Valadorna (by Curlin ), runner-up in the 2016 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1).
