Alan Leavitt, who reached the heights of Standardbred breeding and racing and also contributed his knowledge and thoughtfulness to various versions of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission over the years, died May 6. He was 88.

A graduate of Andover Academy and Harvard University, he served as a director of the United States Trotting Association and the Hambletonian Society. In 2008 he was elected to the Harness Racing Living Hall of Fame. Leavitt often provided his expertise from the Standardbred side to a commission that typically first considered the Thoroughbred side when making decisions. He also served the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret and his three children, Josephine, Harris, and David Leavitt. Services will be private.
