Puca may be only four foals deep in her career as a broodmare, but she is already positioned to shake up the record books. The mare is set to have an unprecedented third straight foal break from the Kentucky Derby (G1) starting gate May 3 in Baeza.
John Stewart purchased the mare for $2.9 million at the 2023 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale and, seeing her continued success, is hoping to get racing fans involved. Ahead of Baeza's Derby run, he announced May 2 that he has sold a stake in Puca's 2024 yearling by Hill 'n' Dale Farms stallion Good Magic to MyRacehorse, a company that sells fractional ownership in racehorses allowing fans to experience horse ownership for a lower cost.
Stewart said the decision was made to "allow horse racing fans a chance to own a piece of history."
"This colt is a true collector's item type and to be able to give our customers a chance to access this caliber of bloodstock at such a reasonable price point is a thrill," said MyRacehorse's CEO and founder Michael Behrens. "Our goal at MyRacehorse is to make the inaccessible accessible, and we continue to deliver on that mission. It helps to have enthusiastic and open-minded partners like Mr. Stewart."
MyRacehorse purchased 51% of the colt for $2,295,000, a $4.5 million valuation. Stewart said he will own 26% of the partnership, leading to the syndication being worth 25%.
Shares in the colt are $98 for 0.00125% equity. In total, $980,000 worth of shares are available. As of 7 p.m. ET Friday, $129,458 worth of shares had already been sold. Chad Brown is listed as the colt's trainer.
The yearling is a full brother to 2023 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Mage and 2024 Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Dornoch , leading to the nickname "Preaky" emerging around the barn to signal the goal of completing the Good Magic-Puca Triple Crown with a victory in the 2027 Preakness Stakes (G1).
Baeza, by McKinzie , is a half sibling to the yearling and will bid to become the third classic winner for the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association's 2024 Broodmare of the Year. Her first foal, the Gun Runner filly, Gunning, was a three-time winner and twice stakes-placed.
MyRacehorse is coming off a 2024 season in which they won the Preakness Stakes (G1) and Pennsylvania Derby (G1) with Seize the Grey and Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) with Eclipse champion male sprinter Straight No Chaser. Seize the Grey had 2,570 owners involved through a MyRacehorse offering.
"When this opportunity came up, we had to jump at it," Behrens said. "We're very excited to team up with Mr. Stewart and his team and can't wait to see if this colt can follow in the footsteps of his siblings. He bears a striking resemblance to Mage and we hope down the line he'll make for another exciting stallion prospect for us like his full brothers and our own stars Seize the Grey, Authentic, and Straight No Chaser."
