The estate of Virginia Kraft Payson (1930-2023), prominent Thoroughbred owner, breeder, and sports journalism pioneer, will be offered over the course of five auctions this month conducted by Bluegrass Auction, Appraisal & Realty.
Best known as the proprietor of Payson Stud Farm near Lexington and the Payson Park Training Center in Florida, Payson began her career in 1977, producing numerous winners, including 1984 Travers Stakes (G1) winner Carr de Naskra and homebred champion St. Jovite, the 1992 European Horse of the Year.
In 1997, the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association honored her as Breeder of the Year.
Less well known, Mrs. Payson was the first female writer for Sports Illustrated, appearing in its debut issue in 1954. Over a 26-year journalism career, she distinguished herself as a noted writer, big-game hunter, and global adventurer. Highlights include a hunt with the Shah of Iran, competing as the first woman in the Alaskan Iditarod sled-dog race, authoring five books, achieving success as a competitive fisherman, and racing sailboats.
"Virginia Payson led a remarkable life of adventure," said Chuck McKee, Principal Auctioneer for Bluegrass Auction, Appraisal & Realty. "Her passion for animals shines through her sporting art collection, and the breadth of her interests is reflected in the fine art, jewelry, and antiques from Payson Stud and her various residences. This diverse collection truly honors her fearless spirit."
More than 1,200 items will be offered June 15-22, 2025, including works by renowned sporting artists such as Henry Stull, Jenness Cortez, and Peter Howell; fine art by Aelbert Cuyp, Aristide Maillol, Dora Maar and Neysa McMein; an extensive collection of fine jewelry; rare antiques featuring four sugar chests; and numerous items connected to Payson Stud.
