Airdrie Stud's first-crop sire Beau Liam , who already has a winner in Puerto Rico and Russia, was represented by his first North American winner when the 2-year-old filly Border Czar won a maiden special weight race June 7 at Woodbine.
The Kentucky-bred filly, making her debut for owner/trainer Barbara Minshall, hopped slightly at the start and was last of seven early. Under a hustling ride from Rafael Hernandez she started passing horses along the inside on the backstretch. Fanned six wide into the lane and still back in fifth place, Border Czar chased down the leaders and won by a neck.
Final time for five furlongs on the all-weather surface rated fast was :59.24. Border Czar paid $5.60 to win as the second choice.
Border Czar was bred by Southern Comfort Farm. She is the fourth foal out of the winning Street Boss mare Adalee. She now has three winners from four starters, including Feelgood Factor, a filly by The Factor who is a multiple stakes winner in Panama.
Legion Bloodstock, agent, bought Border Czar for $25,000 at the 2024 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale, where she was consigned by Vinery Sales.
Beau Liam is by 2015 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) winner Liam's Map , a son of Unbridled's Song. Beau Liam's stud fee has stood at $6,000 since he was first introduced at Airdrie, near Midway, Ky., for the 2022 breeding season.
