It's that time of year again—when we're about to be inundated with Christmas in July ads and there tends to be a little stagnation in the General Sires List.
Case in point: Following Stephen Foster Stakes (G1) weekend, which, after Mindframe won, only saw his sire Constitution climb one spot from No. 6 to No. 5, no other sire in the top 25 moved more than two places based on progeny earnings.
Instead of giving a sneak preview of summer holiday sales (and who doesn't like the newest scented candle?), we'll take a peek at the top third-crop sires.
Omaha Beach is leading the way with $5,204,056 in progeny earnings, with his roster being led by Kopion, winner of two graded stakes—the Derby City Distaff Stakes (G1) and the Santa Monica Stakes (G2). In just seven career starts, Kopion has already earned more than $1 million, with $710,100 coming this year.
The sire can't be sitting atop his class with just one runner of note. Nevada Beach is coming off a win in the June 28 Los Alamitos Derby. The Bob Baffert-trained colt is 2-1-0 from three starts.
Ontario-bred Caitlinhergrtness moved into graded stakes toward the end of last year and has three top-four finishes, including a win in the Belle Mahone Stakes (G3) in four graded starts. She was the sire's top earner in 2024.
Omaha Beach, a son of War Front , was the top second-crop sire a year ago. His offspring banked $8,017,193. He was also top among his class with 11 black-type winners, 21 black-type runners, three graded stakes winners, and two grade 1 stakes.
This year, he has the most black-type winners (8), black-type runners (15), and tied for grade 1 winners (1) of all third-crop sires.
He is the only third-crop sire currently in the overall top 25, ranked No. 19. Omaha Beach stands at Spendthrift Farm near Lexington for $35,000. He is also the only member of his class in the top 25 among sires of turf runners this year, where he is No. 21.
Just outside the overall top 25 but second among the third-crop sires is Maximus Mischief .
The son of one of the greatest sires, Into Mischief , Maximus Mischief is one of two third-crop sires with one of his progeny to have earned $1 million this year. Raging Torrent ($1,130,000) has won six of his last seven starts dating back to last year. This year, he's 2-for-2 with wins in the Godolphin Mile (G2) at Meydan Racecourse and the Met Mile (G1) at Saratoga Race Course.
Irish Maxima opened the year with a pair of wins, including the Distaff Stakes (G3), and most recently was fifth in the Bed o' Roses Stakes (G2).
Maximus Mischief leads his class with three graded stakes runners and tied for grade 1 winners at one. He is 13th overall among all sires this year with runners on the dirt, just ahead of Omaha Beach, who is 16th.
Maximus Mischief, like Omaha Beach, stands at Spendthrift with his 2025 fee set at $15,000.
Rounding out the top five third-crop sires are Vino Rosso , Mitole , and Audible .
