Graded stakes action from Churchill Downs and Woodbine this past week did little to alter the National Thoroughbred Racing Association Top Thoroughbred Poll. The leading 10 horses in the poll from week 34 remain unchanged relative to week 33. The latest poll covers racing performances through Sept. 14.
Again on top is Godolphin's Sovereignty, the undisputed leader of the 3-year-old male division. The Bill Mott trainee leads over a pair of 4-year-olds: second-ranked Fierceness and third-ranked Mindframe, both trained by Todd Pletcher.
Sovereignty received 26 first-place votes, the same as last week, while Mindframe and Thorpedo Anna, the reigning Horse of the Year, received two and one first-place vote, respectively. Thorpedo Anna is fifth overall in the voting, one spot behind Sierra Leone, last year's Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) winner.
British bookmakers offering ante-post (future) wagering on the Nov. 1 Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar have Sovereignty favored at odds of around 3-2. Sierra Leone is second favorite at odds between 4-1 and 5-1, Fierceness is between 6-1 and 8-1, and Mindframe, Preakness Stakes (G1) Journalism, and Japanese star Forever Young are next between 8-1 and 10-1.
The NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll, voting for which is conducted by national media, represents Thoroughbreds competing for Horse of the Year. The poll concludes Nov. 4, a few days after the two-day Breeders' Cup World Championships.
