Riding high off their homebred Forever Young's win in the Nov. 1 Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) at Del Mar, Katsumi Yoshida's Northern Farm added six high-profile mares to their stable during Fasig-Tipton's The November Sale, for a total of $14.9 million.
Multiple grade 1 winner Just F Y I (Hip 109) set the Fasig-Tipton sale pavilion abuzz early during the breeding stock portion of the Nov. 3 boutique sale, sailing to $4.5 million.
Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa consigned the 4-year-old daughter of 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify , who is believed to be in foal to leading sire Into Mischief . She is carrying her first foal.
Just F Y I raced from 2 to 4, winning the Frizette Stakes (G1) and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) at 2 and going on at 3 to be runner-up in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) and Ashland Stakes (G1). She retired with a 3-3-0 record from eight career starts and earned $1,727,530. Just F Y I was bred and campaigned by George Krikorian and trained by Bill Mott.
"She was a 2-year-old champion," said Shingo Hashimoto, who signed the ticket on behalf of Katsumi Yoshida's Northern Farm. "She looked gorgeous; she has a very nice pedigree. She's in foal to Into Mischief, so she basically clicked all the boxes that we wanted. We're very excited."
The 2023 champion 2-year-old filly will head to Northern Farm in Japan, where Hashimoto said she will be a good fit.
"She's a very big mare with a very good frame," Hashimoto said. "I think she will match many types of stallions in Japan."
Hashimoto said he was not surprised by the $4.5 million it took to secure the mare.
"Of course, it would've been better if we could've bought her a little cheaper, but she's one of those horses that's going to be very expensive; it's a very tough market," he said. "So, I'm kind of relieved that we got one mare at least in the beginning, but I assume it's going to be a very strong market."
Yoshida also added a pair of grade 1 winners by Nyquist in Tenma (Hip 164) and Randomized (Hip 137) to their stable, selling for $3.2 million and $2.5 million, respectively.
Tenma won the 2024 Del Mar Debutante Stakes (G1) at 2, and won back-to-back graded stakes as a 3-year-old for owners Baoma Corp. and trainer Bob Baffert. The 3-year-old filly has earned $636,000 from eight career starts. She was offered as a racing or broodmare prospect by Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa, agent.
"She (Tenma) had a very nice racing career, and her pedigree is great," Hashimoto said. "We have a mare called Simply Glorious from the same mare line, and she had a very good foal this year. We're very excited to take her to Japan.
"We haven't decided yet (who to breed Tenma to). But the foal out of Simply Glorious was by Kitasan Black, so that may be a choice."
Hashimoto said Randomized's two grade 1 wins really stood out to them.
"Her pedigree is very strong. She looks like a typical Nyquist filly."
Toward the end of the sale, Yoshida added grade 1 winner Excellent Truth to his shopping spree for $2.5 million. The 5-year-old daughter of Cotai Glory won the Diana Stakes (G1T) at Saratoga Race Course for Resolute Racing and trainer Chad Brown, after three runner-up finishes in grade/group 1 races. She was consigned by ELiTE, agent.
Graded stakes winners Special Wan and Saffron Moon, rounded out the list at $1.3 million and $900,000, respectively.
