Spendthrift Makes History With Multiple Top Sire Titles

Historical feats are something Thoroughbred aficionados love. These moments set new standards by which all who come after (and even sometimes before) are judged. 

That makes what Spendthrift Farm accomplished last year all the more remarkable. 

The stallion farm near Lexington is home to North America's leading sire, first-crop sire, second-crop sire, and third-crop sire for 2025. This is the first time since at least 1994, which coincides with when records of third-crop sires began to be tracked regularly, that a single farm stood the leading first-, second-, and third-crop sires. Adding the overall leading sire makes the distinction all the more impressive. 

Ranking above all stallions once again is Into Mischief . For the seventh consecutive year, Into Mischief was the top sire based on progeny earnings with $31,863,395. He had the most winners (222), the most runners (450), the most black-type performers (67), the most graded stakes winners (17), and the most grade 1 winners (five). The 17 graded stakes winners match his career best (2022 and 2024), and the five grade 1 winners are one shy of his best set in 2023. 

Into Mischief was also the top dirt sire of the year.

While the gap between him and the No. 2 overall sire, Not This Time , was the third-smallest difference during his reign, at just a hair under $7.9 million, it's also not close. His top earner is likely champion 3-year-old male Sovereignty. 

Into Mischief stands for $250,000.

That takes nothing away from the year Not This Time had. He led all stallions by number of black-type winners (30), the percentage of runners that won black type (10.2%), the percentage of black-type performers (17.6%), and the average earnings per runner ($81,262). Not This Time's percentage of black-type performers is the third-highest percentage to lead a particular year since 2015. The three sires with better percentages (Gun Runner , 20.1% in 2022; War Front , 21.7% in 2016; and Dynaformer, 25% in 2015) all had fewer runners and fewer black-type runners by substantial amounts. 

Omaha Beach  was the top second-crop sire in 2024, so it was fitting that he would continue leading his class in 2025. Led by his top earner Kopion, Omaha Beach's offspring banked nearly $13.7 million. The son of War Front led in nearly every category: Most runners (262), most winners (139), most black-type winners (16), most black-type performers (31), most graded stakes winners (five), and was tied with Maximus Mischief  as the leader by number of grade 1 winners (two).

Omaha Beach stands this year for $75,000.

It was a similar tune for top sophomore sire Vekoma . He was the top freshman sire a year ago and continued on his upward trajectory.

He led all second-year stallions with 114 winners in addition to 15 black-type winners, 31 black-type horses, seven graded stakes winners, and the average earnings per runner of $66,763. His top earner in 2025 was Golden Vekoma, who banked more than $1 million.

Vekoma stands this year for $100,000.

Leading the way among sires who had their first runners hitting tracks in 2025 was Yaupon . His top earner was Arctic Beast ($265,503), who won his first three races before finishing second in the Remington Springboard Mile Stakes. 

Yaupon, by Uncle Mo, was top among all freshmen sires with 82 runners, 30 winners, a record eight black-type winners for a North American freshman sire, and 13 black-type performers. 

He stands for $60,000 this year.

On the turf, Not This Time edged out the top turf sire of 2024, Twirling Candy , by $2.5 million. Not This Time stands for $250,000 at Taylor Made Stallions near Nicholasville, Ky.

The late Souper Speedy topped the sires on all-weather surfaces for the third straight year and fourth out of the last five. Souper Speedy stood at T. C. Westmeath Stud Farm in Ontario, Canada, and died in 2024. His offspring earned $2.9 million, with three of his six black-type winners for the year winning stakes on Woodbine's synthetic main track.
