Spendthrift Farm's multiple grade 1 winner Dornoch sired his first reported foal Jan. 7 when a colt was born at Taylor Made Farm near Nicholasville, Ky.
Bred by Albaugh Family Stable, the bay colt is out of the mare Four Grands and hails from the immediate family of top sires Not This Time and Liam's Map . Four Grands, by Honor Code, is out of the stakes-winning mare Taylor S, and her granddam is the late blue hen mare Miss Macy Sue.
"We're absolutely thrilled with the colt. He weighs a little over 130 pounds and is just a big, strong colt with great substance, a beautiful head, tons of bone, and an athletic frame," Taylor Made's Steve Castagnola said. "He is out running the paddock with his mom right now and just full of energy. We could not be happier."
A 6 1/4-length debut winner at Gulfstream Park as a 3-year-old, Four Grands' 2025 foal represents a return to a familiar sire line. Her first foal in 2023 is a colt by Dornoch's grandsire, Curlin , and her third foal in 2025 is a filly by Dornoch's sire, Good Magic . The mare also had a Nyquist filly in 2024 which was purchased at last year's Keeneland September Yearling Sale for $500,000 by Steve Young, agent.
"The Albaughs and I were big fans of Dornoch, and we wanted to stick to the (Curlin) sire line with an exciting stallion that could give the mare some size and leg. We got a terrific result. If we had a barn full of individuals like this colt then we would be in great shape," Castagnola added.
Dornoch, the classic-winning son of Good Magic, captured the 2023 Remsen Stakes (G2) at Aqueduct Racetrack as a 2-year-old over eventual champion Sierra Leone , before going on to a stellar 3-year-old campaign that made him a 2024 Eclipse Award finalist. Out of 2024 Kentucky Thoroughbred Association Broodmare of the Year Puca, Dornoch won the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream, the 1 1/4-mile Belmont Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course, and the Haskell Stakes (G1) at Monmouth Park, defeating fellow classic winners Mystik Dan and Seize the Grey along with Sierra Leone and subsequent grade 1 winners Mindframe and Antiquarian in his pair of back-to-back grade 1 victories.
Last year, Dornoch was a top five first-season covering sire by average, with in-foal mares selling up to $585,000—the highest price for a broodmare in foal to a freshman sire in North America. The quality of mares from his debut book was also reflected in the 2025 Mares Bred Comparable Index published by BloodHorse MarketWatch, with Dornoch having a 1.63 CI to lead the way for sons of Good Magic at stud.
