Canadian jockey Pietro Moran's riding accomplishments were recognized Jan. 22 when the 20-year-old was named the Eclipse Award winner as outstanding apprentice during the Eclipse Awards ceremony at The Breakers Palm Beach in South Florida.
Moran topped all apprentices in three statistical categories in 2025, with Daily Racing Form crediting him with 140 victories from 863 rides and earnings of $6,083,835 in rides as an apprentice through Dec. 27. He finished second in the Woodbine rider standings with 139 wins, trailing only veteran rider Rafael Hernandez. He has since ridden at Turfway Park in Kentucky, where his apprenticeship expired earlier this month.
He joins a select group of Canadian-based apprentices who have earned an Eclipse Award, following Mickey Walls, Neil Poznansky, Emma-Jayne Wilson, Omar Moreno, and Kazushi Kimura.
Moran, the son of jockey David Moran, began riding in 2023. Injuries and annual breaks to the Woodbine racing season allowed him to sustain his apprenticeship throughout 2025.
His Eclipse Award-winning season was highlighted by a victory riding Al and Bill Ulwelling's Mansetti for trainer Kevin Attard in the King's Plate Stakes, the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. The victory made him one of the youngest winners in the modern history of the race.
In addition to the King's Plate, he registered a pair of graded stakes-winning rides in 2025, taking the Marine Stakes (G3) on Mansetti and Seaway Stakes (G3) atop Elysian Field.
