Modonday was an emphatic first winner for sire Mo Donegal , running out a 7 1/2-length winner on debut in a maiden special weight race Aug. 15 at Gulfstream Park.
Breaking alertly from the rail in the six-horse field, the 2-year-old colt raced to the front for rider Rasheed Hughes and stayed there. Posting fractions of :23.18 and :46.94, Modonday raced wide coming out of the turn but powered home through the stretch, crossing the wire in :59.44 for the 5 furlongs on a fast main track.
Saffie Joseph Jr. trains the colt for owner Final Furlong Farm; Modonday paid $15.40 to win.
Bred in Kentucky by Spendthrift Farm out of the Carpe Diem mare Brand New Day, Modonday hails from the family of grade 3 winner Mi Bago and, further back, grade 2 winners Tricky Creek, Speed Dialer, Parade Ground, and Parade Leader.
Modonday is one of 135 2-year-olds in the first crop of sire Mo Donegal, who stood the 2026 breeding season at Spendthrift Farm for $5,000. Trained by Todd Pletcher for Donegal Racing and later also Repole Stable, Mo Donegal won the 2021 Remsen Stakes (G2) at 2 in his third career start. The following year, he finished third in the Holy Bull Stakes (G3) and won the Wood Memorial Stakes (G2) before running fifth in the Kentucky Derby (G1). In what would be his final start, Mo Donegal started next in the 1 1/2-mile Belmont Stakes (G1), rolling to a 3-length victory as the 5-2 favorite.
He retired to Spendthrift with a 4-0-2 record in seven starts and $1,511,800 in earnings.
