One of the biggest questions heading into the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) this year, as it is most years, is whether the 3-year-old crop will be able to compete with the older horses. None of the crop's defining 3-year-olds have tackled older horses to this point in the season, and division leaders Golden Tempo, Napoleon Solo, The Puma, and Further Ado  are pre-entered for the Classic's challenge Oct. 31.

However, one week prior on Oct. 24 at Keeneland, there could be an early glimpse of what waits for them as Silent Tactic, a familiar rival to some of those runners, will first take the dive into the deep-end during the $350,000 Fayette Stakes (G3).

John Oxley and Victoriam Farm's 3-year-old Tapit  colt is the lone sophomore in the overflow field limited to 12 set to compete over 1 1/8 miles. His dual Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse knows this will be a real test for the 15-1 shot. Casse said this time of year is typically when his 3-year-olds are given some time off, but Silent Tactic already had his break this spring when a foot bruise knocked him out of the Triple Crown races.

His result this weekend will play a large role in whether he continues on to a race as prestigious as the Clark Stakes (G2), or attempts to pick up a few more wins against straight 3-year-olds in races such as the Zia Park Derby.

"We've come to a fork in the road, I got to figure out whether to go right or left," Casse said. "He's continuing to get better. From a physical and healthy standpoint, he's never been better. This is a fact-finding mission this weekend; is he ready to play against the older kids, the older horses?"

Silent Tactic has been a consistent runner for the Casse barn throughout his career, hitting the board in eight of nine starts. In late August, he gave an uncharacteristically dull effort when eased in the Travers Stakes (G1), but bounced back a month later to win a dogfight in the Oklahoma Derby (G3). That heart he has shown on multiple occasions could be key to pulling him through against older competition.

"We can look at numbers, but numbers only say so much," Casse said about trying to analyze where the 3-year-olds stack up against older horses. "It's what's in their hearts when it comes to the battle. This is a fact-finding mission, and it could tell you a lot about what's going to happen in the future."

Chief in his competition is Wathnan Racing's Hit Show, who has won this race each of the past two years for trainer Brad Cox and is the 4-5 morning-line favorite this year. He'll start from the rail. With trainer Brian Lynch, the Wathnan team also returns multiple graded stakes winner Tumbarumba to the United States after a winter in the Middle East, where he was third in the Saudi Cup (G1) and sixth most recently in the March 28 Dubai World Cup (G1).

San Siro and Willy D's both enter off stakes wins on different trips then they'll see Saturday. Willy D's won the three-turn Charles Town Classic (G2) Aug. 28 at this distance while San Siro was successful around three turns in the 1 1/2-mile Greenwood Cup at Parx Racing.

Other top runners include Stars and Stripes, second to Forever Young in the Sept. 18 Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) and winner of Keeneland's Ben Ali Stakes (G3) in the spring; and grade 1 winner Nevada Beach, who ships east for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert.
