Renowned owner/breeder Arthur Hancock III announced Feb. 20 the release of his autobiography Dark Horses: A Memoir of Redemption that presents an unforgettable panorama—from his childhood on historic Claiborne Farm, his forays into songwriting and music, his success as an owner and breeder of racehorses, and his battle with alcoholism.
With candor and his signature humor, the memoir speaks to both his successes and his disappointments. In every twist and turn, he has dealt with adversity, faced his demons, and embraced the opportunities life has afforded him.
Born into one of Thoroughbred racing's most prominent families, Hancock's future seemed almost predestined. He ultimately fulfilled that birthright, but not in the way that was once imagined. Denied the helm at the family farm, Hancock developed his own Stone Farm, a few miles down the road. There he has raised more than 200 stakes winners and multiple champions, including three Kentucky Derby (G1) winners.
Hancock is a poet and songwriter as well. Songs he has written have been recorded by the likes of Willie Nelson, Ray Price, and Grandpa Jones. Hancock has written and recorded three folk country and bluegrass albums: A Horse of a Different Color, Time, and Sunday Silence. He also collaborated with his son for the release of Arthur & Arthur.
Hancock's friends and associates range from Thoroughbred racing dignitaries and well known musicians to local hometown buddies he's known since childhood. Together, they weave a rich history.
