Towards the end of a lackluster first day of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training April 15, Donato Lanni signed the ticket for $900,000 on Hip 190, a well-bred Curlin filly out of the stakes-placed Into Mischief mare Motivated Seller.
Consigned by de Meric Sales, agent, the Klaravich Stables-bred filly breezed the co-fastest eighth of a mile during the first day of the under tack show April 6 when she was clocked going :09 4/5.
Lanni purchased the filly for client Baoma, the same entity that owns recent Santa Anita Oaks (G2) victress and Kentucky Oaks (G1) contender Tenma. He also signed for Tenma at last year's OBS Spring Sale for $850,000. The daughter of Nyquist currently sits at No. 6 on the Kentucky Oaks leaderboard.
"She (Hip 190) was an obvious type of horse," said Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, who will train the filly. "She's athletic, well bred, Curlin's hot, a good family. She breezed really well. We're blessed to have clients to be able to buy horses like that."
Breeder Klaravich Stable is no stranger to talented fillies, as they campaign homebred Ways and Means, a 4-year-old filly by Practical Joke , out of the Warrior's Reward mare Strong Incentive who sold for $2.75 million in foal to Into Mischief to M.V. Magnier and White Birch Farm at Fasig-Tipton's 2024 The November Sale.
"She is a beautiful filly," said Tristan de Meric of Hip 190. "She did everything she was supposed to do, and we were expecting a big number. Very happy with the result. She's just a very balanced filly, very early looking, one that you can go right on with. She's sound, she hasn't had any issues. She's a filly we have high hopes for, and best of luck to Bob (Baffert) and to her new owners."
De Meric Sales also sold Hip 96, a Tapit filly out of the stakes-winning No Nay Never mare Mae Never No, for $575,000 to Liz Crow, agent for Go Go Grey Stable. The gray or roan filly was bred in Florida by Bridlewood Farm. The filly breezed an eighth of a mile in :10 on the first day of the under tack show.
"Very good opening day for us," said de Meric. "The market is there for the right horses that jump through the hoops. We're very happy with the Tapit filly (Hip 96). She's a homebred of Bridlewood that we were lucky enough to buy into in October. Bridlewood kept a piece, which is great for everybody. George (Isaacs) helped put that deal together, and we were happy that she was well-received. She was always a beautiful filly and really stood out. Best of luck to Liz (Crow) ... she had plenty of competition. A lot of people wanted her."
