Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Journalism returned to the work tab June 29, breezing a half-mile at his home base Santa Anita Park in :47 4/5. Trainer Michael McCarthy said the son of Curlin came out of the work well, but has no goals yet for a summer campaign.
"I thought he went very well," said McCarthy. "Seemed like he was happy enough to get back on the work tab; he was showcasing his ability here earlier in the week. We thought it was a good time to go ahead and let him stretch his legs."
McCarthy was noncommittal to any summer race plans for Journalism, who finished second to Kentucky Derby (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Sovereignty.
"I just wanted to go ahead and get him back on the work tab," he said. "He (Journalism) could work back next weekend. It could be 10 days. We're just playing it by ear right now."
Journalism has won five of his eight starts, banking $3,198,880 in earnings for owners Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Bridlewood Farm, Don Alberto Stable, Robert LaPenta, Don Alberto Stable, Elayne Stables Five, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith.
He was bred in Kentucky by Don Alberto Corporation and sold to Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners at the 2023 Fasig-Tipton The Saratoga Sale for $825,000 from the Denali Stud consignment.
