Preakness Stakes (G1)-winning jockey Umberto Rispoli will be sidelined for an unknown length of time after he sustained ankle and leg fractures in a Jan. 24 spill in the Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint Stakes.
His mount, Unconquerable Keen, clipped heels in deep stretch and dislodged Rispoli. The 7-year-old gelding trained by Phil D'Amato was collared by the outriders after the completion of the race and walked off under his own power.
Rispoli's agent, Matt Nakatani, shared on X: "Unfortunately, after undergoing multiple tests the results have shown Umberto has a fractured ankle, tibia, and fibula. At this time, he is in good spirits and under great care at a nearby hospital.
"He will be undergoing surgery as soon as possible under doctor's recommendation. As soon as we have a timetable for a return, we will provide more information. Umberto is focused on one thing and one thing only, getting back to the saddle as soon as possible. We are very thankful it wasn't any worse! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all the texts and calls during this difficult time."
Aside from the Preakness, Rispoli piloted Journalism to three other graded stakes victories in 2025, the Santa Anita Derby (G1), Haskell Stakes (G1), and San Felipe Stakes (G2). The pair were also second in the Kentucky Derby (G1), Belmont Stakes (G1), and Pacific Classic Stakes (G1).
