The Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association announced Jan. 26 to hold a preferred yearling sale Sept. 1, and a separate mixed sale to be held Oct. 11. These dates were selected after the board of directors solicited comments from consignors and buyers.
In 2025, Breeders Sales of Louisiana held its annual yearling sale followed by a mixed session Oct. 12 with the intention of avoiding conflict with other yearling sales in the region and nationwide. While results were respectable, the consensus was by that late in the season, many buyers had either spent their budget earlier or had already filled their barns.
The move to Sept. 1 puts the Breeders Sales of Louisiana Preferred Yearling Sale among the first yearling sales of the season. The board is optimistic the earlier date will give breeders in Louisiana the best opportunity to get the best price for their Louisiana-bred yearlings.
Louisiana-breds have been increasingly popular at sales around the country and have been performing exceedingly well on the national stage with a number of graded stakes winners and performers in recent years. Smoken Wicked sold for $38,000 to Valene Farm during the 2023 Breeders Sales of Louisiana Yearling and Mixed Sale. The son of Bobby's Wicked One won last year's Amsterdam Stakes (G2) and to date has earned $711,392. The LTBA also said the Louisiana breeders' awards program continues growing every year.
