Robert and Jeanann McCoy's Epic Horses announced March 19 the appointment of Austin Winfrey as stable manager, effective March 3. The appointment of Winfrey represents Epic Horses' plan to grow the stable and perform at an elite level in the Thoroughbred breeding and racing industry.
The McCoy family has a long history of business ownership and success in the transportation industry. McCoy Group was founded in 1958 by Robert McCoy Sr. and is now a diversified, national transportation enterprise with more than 4,000 employees, still owned and operated by the McCoy family.
The Nevada-based couple made their first purchases at public auction in September of 2024 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, where they secured five head for $3.2 million, including a full brother to 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra for $1.35 million. They were also active at last year's yearling sales and the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. At the top of their yearling purchases was a $725,000 filly by Life Is Good , a half sister to grade 1 winner and millionaire Newgate .
Epic Horses' stable includes horses of all ages, including broodmares and horses of racing age, such as recent Virginia Derby participant and Todd Pletcher trainee Epic Desire.
Winfrey brings seven years of proven experience from co-managing Wolf Creek Farm, co-owning and operating Straight Line Equine Sales consignment, and founding the Horseplay Investments pinhook syndicate.
"You don't pass up the opportunity to manage a stable with the quality of horses and ownership at Epic Horses," Winfrey said. "The McCoy family are incredible people, and I'm ecstatic to take this journey with them."
