So Happy went largely unnoticed in the early stages of his life, bringing just $12,000 during his first public sale appearance—the 2023 Keeneland November Sale. The market showed a little more faith the following fall when Sander Blanco purchased the late April-born colt for $20,000 at the 2024 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale, highlighting his lack of fanfare.
During the winter and spring months in Florida, the son of Runhappy blossomed into a strapping 2-year-old, turning in a sharp furlong breeze in :10 at the under-tack show for the 2025 Ocala Breeders' Sales March 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale. No longer a hidden gem, the bay colt stepped out of the shadows and directly onto the radar of trainer Mark Glatt.
"I start with looking at the breeze shows, and if it looks like an athletic horse that can run, then I take that to the barns when I inspect the horses, and it kind of matches up to the breeze as far as confirmation and looks," Glatt said. "But he just seemed like a perfectly sized horse."
Glatt said even though Runhappy had not taken off as a stallion, there was a lot in his pedigree to like.
"And even given he was a Runhappy, knowing he's out of a Blame mare, there was a certain amount of stamina in the pedigree. And he didn't look like a horse that would necessarily be just a sprinter. He was built more like a two-turn horse."
Although $150,000 is a modest amount of money compared to some horses in the field, such as Potente, who brought $2.4 million as a yearling, Glatt said the colt brought a fair price, given his lackluster pedigree page, which scared off some people.
"Kind of an unproven dam. And I just think that most people weren't that interested in a Runhappy," said Glatt about securing the colt for $150,000. "And actually, $150,000 for a Runhappy was a considerable amount of money if you look at what the Runhappys sold for that particular year."
Glatt noted being impressed by the size and scope of the colt, stating he wasn't too big, but rather just the right size.
"At the time, I was just trying to buy a horse that could hopefully run," he said. "But certainly, he's developed into something much more special than that."
Debuting last November, So Happy broke his maiden at Del Mar by 1 3/4 lengths. He then stepped directly into graded stakes company to capture the San Vicente Stakes (G2), establishing himself as a legitimate Kentucky Derby contender for trainer Mark Glatt.
His most recent effort came when he captured the Santa Anita Derby (G1), over the highly regarded Potente by 2 3/4 lengths. On May 2, the once-overlooked colt will step into the starting gates under Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith at Churchill Downs and vie for his chance at the Run for the Roses for owners Norman Stables and Saints or Sinners.
The Kentucky Derby marks a first for Mark Glatt, but the achievement carries a much deeper weight. Saddling So Happy represents a triumph of the heart, offering hope and inspiration following the passing of his beloved wife, Dena, in February.
"She'll always be with me. She was a big part of my life, obviously, both personally and professionally," Glatt said.
