There is a group of Thoroughbred families identified in the Bruce Lowe system by the prefix 'A.' This denotes families whose earliest known tail-female ancestor was born in the United States rather than being an import from Europe.
The A1 family goes back to an individual known as Janus Mare No. 1, who was foaled around 1760. As her name suggests, she was a daughter of the imported stallion Janus—who, through his cross with Chickasaw mares, also served as the foundation sire of the American Quarter Horse. While the identity of the dam of Janus Mare No. 1 remains unknown, we know her mitochondrial family is G2, the same female line as Fair Play (sire of Man o' War) and, more recently, European superstar sires Galileo, Sea The Stars, and Dubawi.
The family was carried into the 19th century through the Huntsman Mare, foaled around 1798. As the only horse of note by her sire, the Huntsman Mare possessed a pedigree with remarkable inbreeding, even for that era. This includes Janus appearing 5x5x4, notably through the siblings One Eye and a Janus Mare, whose mating produced the granddam of Huntsman. The pedigree also shows Fearnought—the most important sire of America's Colonial era—4x3x3, including 2x2 in the dam of the Huntsman Mare. Fearnought's brother, Warren's Careless, also appears in the third generation, with their sire, Regulus, appearing 4x4x5x4x4. Both the Huntsman Mare and her daughter Ella Crump had only one recorded foal each, but the line blossomed through Ella Crump's daughter, Maria West. Descendants of Maria West have captured every leg of the Triple Crown, including Kentucky Derby winners Riley (1890), Azra (1892), Ben Brush (1896), Regret (1915), Exterminator (1918), and Gato del Sol (1982); Preakness Stakes victor Half Time (1899); and Belmont Stakes winner Counterpoint (1951). The family line has also impacted the Kentucky Oaks with winners Modesty (1884), Lemco (1903), and Amerivan (1965).
That Oaks tradition for the family continued in 2026 with the success of Always a Runner. Remarkably, the Kentucky Oaks (G1) was only the third career start for Always a Runner, who won by 1 1/4 lengths. She broke her maiden by 6 1/2 lengths over 1 mile and 40 yards in early February at Tampa Bay Downs, then earned her way into the Oaks with a 1 1/4-length victory in the Gazelle Stakes (G3).
Despite its U.S. classic heritage, in more recent times, the branch A1 of the family leading to Always a Runner has done its best work in Canada. Her sixth dam, Arctic Fancy (a daughter of Nearctic), is the granddam of several stakes winners, including the successful Canadian sire siblings Bold Executive and Highland Ruckus. Both were by Bold Ruckus; matings between that stallion and Always a Runner's fifth dam resulted in Katahaula County (winner of the Equipoise Mile Handicap, G3) and his sister Noise Enough, winner of the Yearling Sales Stakes and the fourth dam of Always a Runner.
Bred to champion 2-year-old Dehere, Noise Enough produced Miss Seffens, a sprinter/miler who won 11 races, including five black-type events. Despite her stamina limitations, Miss Seffens finished a gallant fourth in a 14-horse field in the Kentucky Oaks. The line continued through a pair of More Than Ready daughters, More Than Real and Miss Always Ready. A heroine of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G2T), More Than Real was exported to Australia, where she produced three stakes winners. One of these, Miss Debutante, is the dam of Lady of Camelot, winner of the 2024 Golden Slipper (G1), champion 2-year-old filly in Australia, and the top-ranked 3-year-old filly on the 2024 World's Best Racehorse rankings. Miss Always Ready, a winner at 2, is the dam of three winners from three starters, most notably the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1T) victor Structor and Always Carina, a Malibu Moon daughter who was a winner, and runner-up in the Mother Goose Stakes (G2). The first mating selected for Always Carina was Gun Runner , and the result is Always a Runner, a $1.05 million 2024 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase who is now an undefeated classic winner. In addition to Always a Runner, Gun Runner was represented in the Oaks by the runner-up, Meaning, as well as the unplaced Search Party and Brooklyn Blonde. As that suggests, the 2017 Horse of the Year has an exceptional crop of 3-year-olds this term.

So far, this crop—Gun Runner's first foals sired at a fee of $125,000—has produced 13 individual stakes winners (eight graded). This includes champion 2-year-old filly Super Corredora; Del Mar Futurity (G1) victor Brant; the undefeated Paladin (winner of the Remsen Stakes, G2, and Risen Star Stakes, G2), who headed the Derby betting before being sidelined by injury; the wide-margin Blue Grass Stakes (G1) victor Further Ado; and Fair Grounds Oaks (G2) winner Life of Joy. Always a Runner is one of 23 stakes winners for Gun Runner out of A.P. Indy line mares (16.5% to starters), but the cross with daughters of Malibu Moon has proved particularly potent with six graded stakes winners from just 15 starters, others including Horse of the Year Sierra Leone and multiple grade 1 winner Locked .
To understand the particular affinity for Malibu Moon mares, we need to take a closer look at Gun Runner's pedigree. The mating that created Gun Runner was designed to reproduce the successful Candy Ride /Storm Cat cross, and Candy Ride's broodmare sire, Candy Stripes, is a Blushing Groom/Northern Dancer cross, while Gun Runner's broodmare sire, Giant's Causeway, is Northern Dancer/Blushing Groom.
Gun Runner is also intentionally inbred to Fappiano, as his dam Quiet Giant is a Storm Cat (Storm Bird)/Fappiano (Mr. Prospector) cross. In the pedigree of Malibu Moon, we find that his dam, group 1 winner Macoumba, is by Mr. Prospector out of a mare by a son of Nijinsky II. Like Storm Bird, Nijinsky II was a Windfields Farm-bred son of Northern Dancer. Thus, Macoumba reinforces the Storm Bird/Mr. Prospector cross found in Gun Runner's dam. We can also note that another A.P. Indy strain to excel with Gun Runner, that of Tapit, also has Mr. Prospector with Nijinsky II, and adds to the reinforcement of the pedigree of Gun Runner's dam with an additional cross of Fappiano.
