Winning graded stakes on the Churchill Downs turf runs in Burnham Square's family.
Mirroring the success of his dam—the Scat Daddy mare Linda, who won the 2016 Mrs. Revere Stakes (G2T) on the Churchill Downs grass—Whitham Thoroughbreds' Burnham Square added a graded stakes win on turf beneath the twin spires by capturing the $235,000 Louisville Stakes (G3T) May 16.
Coming off a 9 3/4-length victory in the Elkhorn Stakes (G2T) last month at Keeneland, the victory was anticipated by the public, who backed him to 1-5 odds against five outclassed rivals. And Burnham Square ran to that strong support by easily rallying past the competition on his way to a 4 3/4-length victory in the 1 1/2-mile grass event.
Hard held in fifth place early by jockey Brian Hernandez Jr., as Freedom's Way set comfortable fractions of :48.80, 1:14.68, and 1:40.26 while chased by Echo Lane, Burnham Square got in gear over the final half-mile of the race, took over and, ultimately, pulled away under a confident hand ride. He ran 1 1/2 miles on good turf softened by an early evening thunderstorm in 2:26.80, topped by a final quarter-mile in :23.09. He paid $2.46 to win.
"Good horses like that—they make everyone look good," Hernandez said. "They make all of our jobs easy, and all the credit goes to Burnham Square."
Dancin in Da'nile grabbed second in a photo ahead of show finisher Echo Lane.
The victory was Burnham Square's fourth at the graded level. Before his turf success this year, he won the Blue Grass Stakes (G1) and Holy Bull Stakes (G3) on dirt as a 3-year-old in 2025. He is 5-4-1 in 13 starts overall with earnings of $2,141,405.
Trainer Ian Wilkes said future targets for Burnham Square include the Aug. 1 Arlington Million (G1T) at Colonial Downs at 1 1/4 miles before a start at Kentucky Downs ahead of the $5 million Breeders' Cup Turf (G1T) at Keeneland in the fall.
A likely option at Kentucky Downs is the Sept. 5 Kentucky Turf Cup Stakes (G2T) at 1 1/2 miles. That race is worth $2 million, counting incentives for Kentucky-breds, and is a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series event, providing a paid, automatic berth into the Oct. 31 Breeders' Cup Turf, also at 1 1/2 miles.
Burnham Square, bred in Kentucky by his owner, is a 4-year-old bay gelding by Liam's Map . Along with Napoleon Solo, Deterministic, and Fulleffort, he is one of four graded stakes winners this year for the stallion, who stands for $50,000 at Lane's End in Kentucky.
