Medaglia d'Oro, Yaupon Juveniles Work in :09 4/5 at OBS

The pair clock the fastest furlong time on Day 4 of the OBS June under-tack show.

Jason Hall says he can't recall a single instance when the Medaglia d'Oro colt he co-bred out of the Desert Party mare Scarlet Emerald didn't impress him and his partners with his superior development.

So when it came time for the dark bay/brown colt named Bulmaro to take another crucial step forward in his young career, Hall was not the least bit shocked to see his protege leave those in his presence with a strong impression.

Consigned as Hip 824 by Marcial Galan, Bulmaro inspired more praise from his connections June 12 when he was one of two horses to work in :09 4/5 during the fourth day of under-tack shows for the Ocala Breeders' Sales June 2-Year-Olds in Training and Horses of Racing Age Sale, tying for the fastest time at the distance along with Hip 637, a dark bay/brown filly by OBS June graduate Yaupon

As one of just two offspring by the now-pensioned Darley stallion Medaglia d'Oro set to be offered at the June sale, Bulmaro was already a candidate to be a standout. The fact that he delivered his stellar breeze after missing three months of training in the winter because of a stall accident was further proof to Hall and his partners that they have a unique athlete on their hands.

"We've loved this colt from Day 1," said Hall, who bred the colt along with Herschel Martindale, Joe Wheeler, and David Branch. "About halfway through the winter, he bumped his forearm, maybe just on a water bucket and developed a hematoma, but that developed some bony growth and we had to go in and do surgery. So, this colt has missed three months of training over the winter, and he still did what he did today. We're very pleased with him."

The colt is a half brother to stakes-placed winner Naughty Lottie, an OBS graduate, and his dam Scarlet Emerald was a winning sprinter for Hall during her racing days. That injection of speed along with Medaglia d'Oro's proven ability to pass on stamina has Hall cautiously optimistic his colt will have plenty of fanfare when he enters the sales ring.

"He's been an elite, athletic-looking foal from Day 1. I can't remember a phase that he went through where he wasn't a standout," said Hall, who also co-bred Hip 237, Kova, a daughter of Army Mule  who also worked in :09 4/5 earlier this week. "He has a little bit more in the hindquarters and gaskin than a lot of the Medaglia d'Oros do and that comes from his mother who was a pure sprinter. I think he's brought the best of both worlds to table with Medaglia d'Oro's stretch and cardio and ability to get two turns and with a healthy dose of speed from his mother.

"We think he would have stood out even in March or April. But now that's he was pushed back to June, I just think he's going to be a huge rock star in this sale."

Joining Bulmaro in grabbing attention Friday was Hip 637, the filly by Yaupon consigned by Grade One Investments. She is out of the winning Macho Uno mare My Kentucky Rose, who won two races in her nine-race career. The filly is a half sister to graded stakes winner Uncharacteristic.

Two horses worked in :20 4/5 to tie for the fastest quarter-mile on the day:

  • Hip 658, a dark bay/brown colt by Aloha West  consigned by Omar Ramirez Bloodstock. The filly is out of the Monsun mare Gravata.
  • Hip 769, a bay colt by Tiz the Law  consigned by Hoppel. The colt is out of the Dixieland Band mare Ragtime Road and is a half brother to stakes-placed winner Decimator.
