Golden Pal, Life Is Good Early 2-Year-Old Leaders

Much of the premier summer meets at Saratoga Race Course and Del Mar lie ahead and with them a plethora of juvenile racing. On the cusp of the busy season for 2-year-olds, The List turned to BloodHorse.com's leading sires lists to see which stallions have already built up credentials with precocious runners.

Leading the freshman sires standings as of July 27 is Ashford Stud's Golden Pal  with 11 winners from 36 starters so far and progeny earnings of $748,327. Not far behind Golden Pal in second by $110,525 is WinStar Farm's Life Is Good , who has been represented by seven winners from 17 runners year to date. 

Turning to the leading sires of 2-year-olds, lo and behold we see these same two sires leading the standings. 

Seeing the leading freshman sire in the top two of leading juvenile sires is not uncommon, with 11 freshmen accomplishing this feat since 2001. Less common is a sire who doubles as the leading juvenile sire for his freshman year, with only four earning these dual titles: Gun Runner  (2021), Uncle Mo (2015), Offlee Wild (2009), and Tapit  (2008). Rarer still is when the top two freshman sires are also the top two sires of juveniles. Offlee Wild and Roman Ruler made this happen in 2009.

Offlee Wild, a son of Wild Again who stood at Darley, and Roman Ruler, a son of Fusaichi Pegasus who stood at Hill 'n' Dale Farms, both had progeny earnings for the year approaching $2 million. 

Offlee Wild ended the year at $1,951,283, bolstered by the performances of Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) winner She Be Wild. Also named 2009's champion 2-year-old filly, She Be Wild won three black-type stakes and earned more than $1.3 million at 2. Offlee Wild was represented by one other stakes winner in 2009 with Heavenville, who won the D.S. Shine Young Memorial Futurity.

Roman Ruler sired three black-type stakes winners his freshman year, including Champagne Stakes (G1) winner Homeboykris, Delta Jackpot Stakes (G3) winner Rule, and Barretts Juvenile Stakes winner Seattle Ruler, who also ran third in the Hollywood Prevue Stakes (G3). Roman Ruler ended the year with $1,939,951.

On the leading juvenile sires list, Offlee Wild and Roman Ruler outranked stout competition in proven sire Smart Strike, who ranked third with $1,839,549 in progeny earnings. In 2009, Smart Strike was represented by champion 2-year-old male Lookin At Lucky, who won three grade 1 stakes that year but finished second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) by a head to Vale of York. That head finish cost Lookin At Lucky (and Smart Strike) $720,000 in earnings.

Golden Pal appears to be in a solid position to hold onto both positions atop the freshman and juvenile standings because opportunity is on his side. The son of Uncle Mo has 143 named foals of racing age compared with Life Is Good who has 106 named foals of racing age. 

The leading freshman sires of 2021-25 averaged 143 named foals of racing age, ranging from 115 for Gun Runner to 154 for Vekoma . During this same time frame, the leading sires had 54-56% runners from named foals and 37-49% winners from runners. The progeny of these same sires also averaged around $33,000 per runner. Applying averages from these percentages to Golden Pal puts him on track to have around $2.61 million in progeny earnings by year's end. Also in Golden Pal's favor for continuing to rack up winners is that he was a graded stakes winner at 2, and his sire Uncle Mo was 2010's champion 2-year-old male.

Life Is Good was not a graded stakes winner at 2, but his sire Into Mischief  already owns six titles as North America's leading sire of 2-year-olds. Also, Life Is Good has 106 named foals of racing age that were produced by a first book that includes 32% of dams that won as juveniles, 26% of dams that have already produced 2-year-old winners, and 5.4% of dams that have produced a 2-year-old stakes winner. For comparison, Golden Pal's first book includes 17% dams that were 2-year-old winners, 22% dams that have produced a 2-year-old winner, and 2.4% dams that have produced a 2-year-old stakes winner.

Stakes winners drive earnings, and Life Is Good has already sired a stakes winner in Waggley, who has won two stakes to date, including the Kentucky Juvenile Stakes. Waggley has earned $267,205 so far. As of July 27, Life Is Good has the highest average earnings per runner among the freshman sire class at $37,518.

Golden Pal has not had a stakes winner yet but he's sired three stakes performers, so a black-type winner is on the horizon.

Lots of breakout performances by elite juveniles are still to be run that could shake up the leading freshman and juvenile sire standings. But Golden Pal and Life Is Good have an early jump and the foundations to be among the best at the end of year.
