Andrea "Ande" Phipps, the wife of Ogden Mills "Dinny" Phipps, the late, longtime chairman of The Jockey Club, died July 28 after a short illness surrounded by her children in New York City.
She was the matriarch of the Phipps Stable and the co-owner and -breeder of Kentucky Derby (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Golden Tempo.
Among the graded stakes winners that ran exclusively for the Phipps Stable in the past 20 years were Smuggler, Good Reward, Pine Island, Persistently, Point of Entry , Boisterous, Imagining, and Mr Speaker. The Phipps Stable campaigned countless other stakes and graded stakes winners in various partnerships through the years.
Ande Phipps was a native of Oneonta, N.Y., and she graduated from the University of Pennsylvania before pursuing a career as a registered nurse.
After Dinny Phipps died April 6, 2016, the future of the family stable fell to Ande Phipps and her four children to determine. In a May 31 feature published by BloodHorse, family members said the four siblings, with their mother, agreed to downsize the stable while continuing its racing operations and a breeding program.
"Each generation opens the door for the next, and the Phipps women have been trailblazers," Monique Delk, executive director of racing operations for St. Elias Stables, told BloodHorse. She works closely with Daisy Phipps Pulito, who is running the Phipps Stable's day-to-day operations. Phipps Stable and St. Elias Stable together bred and race Golden Tempo.
"That lineage raised strong women and very smart women that did not just want to sit back and watch," Delk continued. "They wanted to be involved and participate in the sport. That's where Daisy's passion comes from. She saw women doing things to help her and she is trying to do the same things for the next generation of women."
Phipps is survived by six children: Kayce Reagan Hughes (Jim), Kelley Reagan Farish (Bill), Lilly Phipps Cardwell (John), Daisy Phipps Pulito (David), Samantha Phipps Alvarez (Matt), and Ogden Phipps II (Ashley), as well as 24 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A private celebration of Ande Phipps' life will be held at a later date.
