War Emperor breaks his maiden at Woodbine

Michael Burns

Canadian champion Avie's Flatter was represented by his first winner at stud Aug. 23 when War Emperor won the sixth race at Woodbine.

Bred, owned, and trained by Barbara Minshall, the 2-year-old gelding was making his career debut in the maiden optional claiming event going 6 furlongs on Tapeta. Breaking well from the outside of an eight-horse field under jockey Romero Maragh, War Emperor settled in mid-pack before launching a sustained rally on the outside to run down the leaders. His final surge carried him to a half-length victory in 1:11.58.

War Emperor is the first foal out of the winning Declaration of War mare War Empress.

A son of Flatter, Avie's Flatter stood the 2026 season at Colebrook Farms Stallion Station for a CA$3,500 fee. On the racetrack, he showed plenty of early promise at Woodbine winning his debut by 2 1/2 lengths in 2018 before finishing fourth in the Summer Stakes (G1T). He then won the Cup and Saucer Stakes and Coronation Futurity. He was named Canada's champion 2-year-old male at that year's Sovereign Awards.

Avie's Flatter kicked off his 3-year-old campaign with a win in the Transylvania Stakes (G3T) at Keeneland. He would go on to hit the board in all three jewels of the Canadian Triple Crown, finishing second in both the Queen's Plate and Prince of Wales Stakes before running third in the Breeders' Stakes.

Grade 2-placed at 4, Avie's Flatter would tally wins at 5 in the Connaught Cup Stakes (G2T) and Nearctic Stakes (G2T). He would retire with a record of 7-3-3 from 20 starts for earnings of US$947,388.
