When Hip 681 steps into the ring at this year's Keeneland September Yearling Sale, the colt will be one of the few horses in the world with close ties to an eight-figure sales horse.

Hip 681 is a son of Curlin —Lucrezia, by Into Mischief , making him a half brother to Zedan, a son of Flightline who sold for $10.5 million at this year's Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale. That is the highest price ever for a 2-year-old sold by OBS and is the second-highest price for a 2-year-old ever sold in North America, trailing only the $16 million paid in 2006 for The Green Monkey.
Now we'll see what little brother can do in the sales ring.
While it's not realistic to expect another eight-figure price, he certainly brings the sire power as a son of Curlin out of a stakes-winning Into Mischief mare. Seven-time leading sire Into Mischief opened another bag of tricks last year when he topped the 2025 broodmare sire list, paced in that category by Horse of the Year Sovereignty.
Edward Seltzer is the breeder of Hip 681, who is consigned to the Keeneland September sale by Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa, agent.
Repole Stable purchased him for $320,000 as a weanling at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale last fall.
"He's a well-made, balanced colt, and we're hoping he does well," said Hill 'n' Dale farm manager Peter Conway.
The $10.5 million juvenile was bred by Edward and Beverly Seltzer and W.S. Farish of Lane's End, where Flightline stood the 2026 season for $125,000. Consigned by Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds, the colt was landed by Amr Zedan's Zedan Racing Stables and promptly named Zedan. The colt previously had sold as a weanling for $575,000 at the 2024 Keeneland November sale to Tom Durant's Classic Equine and then was an out at last year's Keeneland September sale.
On the track, Lucrezia's first two starters, both fillies, are winners. Lightly raced Medici Road, by Quality Road , at age 4 won a maiden race on the turf in June at Saratoga Race Course and is now 1-0-1 in five starts with earnings of $74,975; while Lyudmila, by Gun Runner , posted a 6-length romp in her 2-year-old debut in November 2025 at Laurel Park. She ran third and fourth in two follow-up starts against winners this year, leaving her with a 1-0-1 record in three starts and earnings of $36,800.
A stakes winner at age 2 and 3 who also placed in the 2020 Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2), Lucrezia is out of the Rahy mare Verdana Bold, a grade 3 winner in Canada. Bred by Edward Seltzer, Beverly Anderson, and Krista Seltzer and raced by Edward Seltzer and Anderson, Lucrezia is a half sister to 2017 Sunland Park Oaks winner Ghalia, a daughter of Medaglia d'Oro.
The Seltzers have been developing this family for decades. Edward Seltzer campaigned Verdana Bold, after breeding her in partnership with Gainsborough Farm and Robert Clay. She is a daughter of British-bred True Legacy, also bred by Seltzer. True Legacy, by A. P. Indy, did not race but is a half sister to Holzmeister, a stakes winner at 2, and stakes-placed Overlord. The Seltzers bred and raced the stakes-winning, multiple grade 1-placed dam of True Legacy, Harbour Club, by Danzig.
Conway said the yearling colt was at Hill 'n' Dale when his half brother sold for eight figures.
"That $10 million price tag put him on our radar. Yeah, that was pretty exciting," Conway said. "He was always a nice physical, and we're delighted to have him."
