The Sept. 24 session of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale was led by a colt by Vekoma sold to Pin Oak Stud for $260,000.
Consigned by VanMeter Sales, the colt consigned as Hip 3466 is out of winner Don't Charge It, by Take Charge Indy , and from the family of stakes winners Shop Till You Drop, Competitive Speed, Our Shopping Spree, In Rome, Winning Romance, Jack Hammer, Our Moneyman, and Gotham Gala.
On Thursday, Keeneland sold 317 yearlings for $14,433,500, including post-ring sales, a 12.2% increase from last year's gross of $12,859,000 for 308 horses. Average price of $45,532 climbed 9.1% from $41,750 last year. The median rose 6.7% from $30,000 to $32,000.
Cumulative sales, including post-ring sales, are $546,952,500 for 2,497 yearlings sold for an average of $219,044 and a median of $120,000. Compared to the first 10 sessions of the auction last year, the gross is up 4.9% from $521,264,000, while the average increased 6.7% from $205,303, and the median of $120,000 is 9.1% higher than last year's $110,000.
Seventy yearlings have sold for $1 million or more compared to 56 last year.
Kenny McPeek, agent, was the session's leading buyer, spending $715,000 for five horses, including two yearlings purchased for $210,000 each.
The first was a colt, Hip 3288, by Maclean's Music from the family of grade 1 winner and leading sire Tapit . Consigned by Ashview Farm, agent, he is out of the winning Tiznow mare Sky Gesture and also from the family of champion Rubiano; grade 2 winners Madefromlucky, In Tune, and Dubleo; and grade 3 winner Glitterman.
McPeek also paid $210,000 for a filly (Hip 3546) by Complexity consigned by Brookdale, agent. Out of Imprint, by Quality Road , she is from the family of group 1 winners Gold and Ivory, Heart of Darkness, and India.
A third yearling (Hip 3632) brought $210,000 when Millard R. Seldin Revocable Trust spent the amount for a colt by Dialed In consigned by Ledgelands, agent. Out of My Lil Shamrock, a winning stakes-paced daughter of City Zip, he is from the family of grade/group 3 winners Daloma and Riot Grrrl and stakes winners Gig Harbor, Alsono, and Richies Sweetheart.
Two yearlings sold for $200,000 each.
Killora, agent, consigned the first, a filly by Jackie's Warrior (Hip 3512) purchased by Burns Racing. She is out of Gran Letizia, a winning daughter of Broken Vow, and from the family of group 2 winner King Of Light and group 3 winner Spirit Bird.
Iconic Thoroughbreds paid $200,000 for a daughter of Maclean's Music (Hip 3542) out of Hughes Clues, by Malibu Moon. Consigned by Norevale Farm, agent, she is from the family of grade 1 winner Bevo; grade 2 winners Wilburn, Beethoven, and Grand Sonata; and grade 3 winners Moonlight d'Oro, Moonlight Sonata, and Ballerina d'Oro.
The session's leading consignor was Taylor Made Sales Agency, which sold 36 horses for $1,664,000.
