Belmont Stakes (G1) winner and Crestwood Farm first-crop stallion Sir Winston was represented by his first winner Sept. 27 when West Side Lily won the $7,373 B Cup 2 Year Olds Stakes in the opening race at Rocky Mountain Turf Club in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada.
The 5-furlong non-black type stakes was the career debut for the 2-year-old filly trained by Lyle Magnuson for owner John Gravenslund. Ridden by Larris Allen, West Side Lily raced forward early before beating This Is Faizel by 1 3/4 lengths, with another 13 3/4 lengths back to third-place finisher Time to See.
West Side Lily was bred in Washington by Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Pabst and is out of the winning Speightstown mare Gilded Lily, a half sister to grade 3 winner Painting. She is the second winner from three starters for the dam.
A homebred for Tracy Farmer trained by dual Hall of Famer Mark Casse, Sir Winston broke his maiden at third asking as a 2-year-old before closing out that campaign with a third-place finish in the Grey Stakes (G3) and victory in the Display Stakes. At 3, prior to his victory in the 2019 Belmont Stakes (G1), he was runner-up in the Peter Pan Stakes (G3).
At 4, Sir Winston was runner-up in the Flat Out Stakes at Belmont Park before returning at 5 to win the Valedictory Stakes (G3) and finish second in both the Autumn Stakes (G2) and Durham Cup Stakes (G3), all at Woodbine.
The son of Awesome Again finished his career with a fifth in the 2022 Pegasus World Cup (G1), completing with a record of 6-4-1 from 20 starts for earnings of $1,277,623. He stood the 2026 season at Crestwood Farm near Lexington for a $5,000 fee.
