Summer Starlet has shown brilliance in recent months while sprinting in the East, highlighted by a 6 1/2-length debut maiden victory Aug. 8 at Saratoga Race Course and a follow-up 4 3/4-length triumph in the Sept. 5 Spinaway Stakes (G1) there.
Now she'll get a chance to see if her excellence extends to racing two turns at 1 1/16 miles, as she does Oct.2 when she battles BloodHorse Maiden Watch Hot Prospect Forever Carina and six other 2-year-old fillies in the $650,000 Alcibiades Stakes (G1), the centerpiece of Keeneland's opening-day, three-stakes card.
With the Alcibiades part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In, the race offers a paid, automatic berth into the Oct. 30 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) at Keeneland—though in Summer Starlet's case, she has already punched her ticket. The Spinaway is also part of that qualifying series.
But the Alcibiades is a Breeders' Cup prep for Summer Starlet all the same. Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen opted to use Friday's race as a steppingstone for the Juvenile Fillies, liking how it gives her a race over the track and at the distance. Other options, such as the Oct. 3 Frizette Stakes (G1) going a one-turn mile at Belmont Park, would not have granted her such experience.
Summer Starlet, a $335,000 Keeneland September Yearling Purchase in 2025 who races for owners BC Stables, Wattswood Stables, Bob Albritton, Jay Graham and David Baggett, seems likely to handle the longer distance. She has finished well in each of her two starts—rallying from off the pace, taking command, and lengthening her lead through the lane.

The bay filly is a daughter of City of Light , who won as far as 1 1/8 miles in the Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1) in 2019 at Gulfstream Park, and her dam, sprint winner Act Now, is a daughter of 2007 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Street Sense .
Asmussen and Summer Starlet's new jockey, reigning two-time Eclipse Award winner Flavien Prat, pursue a first win in the Alcibiades.
To remain unbeaten and capture a second straight grade 1, Summer Starlet will have to deal with the impeccably bred Forever Carina, a late-running first-out winner at Saratoga, plus four fillies with experience routing. Emphatic, Ever Forward, Oh She Said Yes, and High Speed Reed recently won at a mile, with Emphatic doing so in the Sorority Stakes at Monmouth Park, and the others in maiden races in Kentucky.
Three Chimneys Farm homebred Forever Carina is a chestnut daughter of standout Three Chimneys Farm stallion Gun Runner and is a full sister to Always a Runner, who took the Kentucky Oaks (G1) this spring for trainer Chad Brown and co-owners Doug Scharbauer and Three Chimneys.

Friday kicks off the 17-day fall meet, which runs until Oct. 24 before Churchill Downs races for a few days ahead of Keeneland hosting the Breeders' Cup World Championships Oct. 30-31. Keeneland will race Wednesdays through Sundays through the fall meet with first post at 1 p.m. ET.
