Derby Winners Provide Breeders' Cup Classic Star Power

In a throwback to the late 1980s and early 1990s, this year's Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) has not one, but two Kentucky Derby (G1) winners pre-entered in the $7 million race Oct. 31 at Keeneland.

Should 2025 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Sovereignty  seize the lead in the stretch of this year's Classic only to see a late challenge from this year's Derby winner Golden Tempo, it will send fans soaring to heights not seen since the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Yes, seeing racing's stars of the spring compete against one another in the fall is a key driver for the Breeders' Cup and thanks to both of the aforementioned Derby winners being in good form, such a dream scenario in 2026 wouldn't be too long of a longshot to play out. Cue Madonna, Michael Jackson, and Garth Brooks, because perhaps the age of crossover megastars is back?

The Breeders' Cup may have arrived in full at the end of its fourth edition when 1986 Kentucky Derby winner Ferdinand held off 1987 Derby winner Alysheba to win the 1987 Breeders' Cup Classic at Hollywood Park. The lucrative Breeders' Cup purses had helped keep two of its stars in training.

It's a plan that makes sense. With the star-making power of the Triple Crown, especially the Kentucky Derby, already in place, the Breeders' Cup offered a path to bring those stars together in the fall. With familiar horses on the track, the fans will follow.

Alysheba won the Classic the following year, 1988. Then, in 1989, dual classic winner Sunday Silence edged Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Easy Goer in the Classic. And, in 1990, Unbridled became the fourth straight Kentucky Derby winner to land the Classic. In 1991, the Classic again featured a pair of Kentucky Derby winners as Unbridled finished third and 3-year-old Strike the Gold fifth as Black Tie Affair took top honors at Churchill Downs.

But that would prove the most successful run for Kentucky Derby winners in the Classic. There wouldn't be another Kentucky Derby winner to take the Classic until Triple Crown winner American Pharoah rolled to victory in 2015 at Keeneland to cap his 3-year-old season and racing career. There hasn't been a Breeders' Cup Classic with two Kentucky Derby winners since 1991.

But if all goes well in the final days of preparation before this year's Classic, we'll see two Kentucky Derby winners in the Classic for the first time in 35 years. It's not a shock that Keeneland could bring two Derby winners together for the Classic because of the 22 starts by previous Derby winners in the Classic, 10 have been at Breeders' Cups in Kentucky—Keeneland or Churchill.

Sovereignty missed last year's Classic after his racing season ended following a 10-length victory in the Travers Stakes (G1). That win capped a four-race win streak that included classic victories in the Derby and Belmont that proved good enough to land Horse of the Year honors for the Godolphin homebred son of Into Mischief .

This year, Sovereignty will enter the Breeders' Cup Classic off of a 4 3/4-length score in the Whitney Stakes (G1), his top effort as a 4-year-old for trainer Bill Mott, who will be looking for his third Breeders' Cup Classic win after sending out Cigar to victory in 1995 and Drosselmeyer in 2011.

Like Sovereignty last year, Golden Tempo captured the Kentucky Derby, skipped the Preakness Stakes (G1), and then won the Belmont. A homebred for Phipps Stable and St. Elias Stable, Golden Tempo enters off a third-place finish in the Travers Aug. 29 at Saratoga Race Course for trainer Cherie DeVaux. DeVaux will be looking for her first Breeders' Cup Classic win but she captured the Breeders' Cup Mile (G1T) in 2024 with More Than Looks .
