The weanling session of Northern Farm's Mixed Sale Oct. 19 delivered a strong market performance.
Katsumi Yoshida's Northern Farm launched its own sale in 2019, when it was called the "Northern Farm Broodmares Sale" and 60 mares/fillies were offered. Thirty-eight weanlings were added to the catalog in 2022 when it was renamed the "Northern Farm Mixed Sale." Driven by the steady year-over-year growth of its weanling segment, Northern Farm expanded the 2026 Mixed Sale to a two-day event, featuring 111 weanlings on opening day.
A total of 105 weanlings were sold for ¥6,060,500,000 (approx. US$39 million). While the average price dipped 12.2% from 2025 to ¥57,719,048 (approx. US$367,874), the median price rose 2% year-over-year to ¥50,000,000 (approx. US$318,677).
Hip 90, a colt by Kitasan Black out of Plainchant, was bought by Junko Kondo for ¥230,000,000 (approx. US$1.47 million), the highest price at the session. Plainchant, winner of the Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte (G2) and Prix Eclipse (G3) in 2020, was offered at Tattersalls December Sale in 2022, when she was in foal to Sottsass. After she was bought back for 450,000 guineas at the sale, Katsumi Yoshida bought her privately. The Kitasan Black colt is the fourth foal of Plainchant.
Shunsuke Yoshida of Northern Farm commented at the conclusion of the sale that the format of a two-day sale should be kept in 2027, as they should offer more than 100 weanlings.
