Bernardini Wields Powerful Influence in Breeders' Cup

The 2006 Preakness Stakes winner is represented by most starters as a broodmare sire.

American classic winner and successful sire Bernardini's rapid ascent as a broodmare sire is further enhanced this year by his representation as the broodmare sire of four Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) contenders.

Already North America's leading broodmare sire with more than $38 million in earnings as of Oct. 26, the late son of A.P. Indy is all but guaranteed to own this position at year's end as the broodmare sire of Sovereignty , Magnitude , Golden Tempo, and Knightsbridge . No one would be surprised to see at least one, and likely more, among the top three at the finish of the Classic.

Bernardini, who died in 2021 because of complications from laminitis, not only has strong representation in the Classic, he is the leading broodmare sire by total Breeders' Cup World Championships starters this year with eight. He also is represented by Immersive in the Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1), Explora and Praying in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1), and Badittude in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1).

Three of these Breeders' Cup starters are Godolphin homebreds: Sovereignty, 2025 Horse of the Year and Kentucky Derby (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1) winner; Knightsbridge, who won this year's Pacific Classic Stakes (G1); and, Immersive, who was the 2024 champion 2-year-old filly and this year won the Fleur de Lis Stakes (G2) and ran third in the Spinster Stakes (G1) ahead of the Breeders' Cup.

Bernardini was bred and raced by Godolphin under the banner of Darley Stable. With trainer Tom Albertrani, the strapping bay colt became Sheikh Mohammed's first American classic winner in the 2006 Preakness Stakes (G1) and then enhanced his credentials further by winning the Travers Stakes (G1) and Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes (G1). In the Breeders' Cup Classic that year, Bernardini and jockey Javier Castellano had the lead after a mile and well down the stretch, but were passed by Invasor and Fernando Jara to be second. Bernardini retired to stud with a 6-1-0 record from eight starts and earned $3,060,480.

As a stallion, Bernardini sired 90 black-type winners that were successful in nine countries. His stakes winners include 53 graded/group winners, of which 17 are grade/group 1 winners and three became champions.

As a broodmare sire represented by his first crop in 2012, Bernardini has already been represented by 141 black-type winners worldwide that include 70 graded/group winners and 10 champions, as of Oct. 27. He leads the North American broodmare sire standings with more than $38 million in earnings, getting a big boost from Magnitude, who won the Dubai World Cup (G1) and heads into the Breeders' Cup Classic with more than $8.3 million in earnings this year. Among the top 20 North American-based broodmare sires by earnings, Bernardini stands out further as the youngest broodmare sire with more than 100 career stakes winners.

"I would argue he is peerless as a broodmare sire," said Darren Fox, stallion manager for Godolphin America at Jonabell Farm. "Both of our incoming new stallions, Sovereignty and Knightsbridge, are out of Bernardini mares and we have two stallions on the roster out of Bernardini mares, so that is 30% of our roster. It is incredible the impact that he's had and will continue to have. The added oomph that Bernardini gives in the broodmare sire position is a major asset for any young stallion prospect starting out. It is a huge advantage, and we are definitely the beneficiaries of that."

Bernardini got off to a record-setting start as a broodmare sire. According to statistics compiled by Godolphin, he is the youngest broodmare sire to reach 25 black-type winners and the youngest to be represented by 25 graded/group winners. Bernardini is also the only stallion in 100 years to have back-to-back Kentucky Derby (G1) winners as a broodmare sire and is the only broodmare sire to have back-to-back Derby and Belmont Stakes (G1) winners—Sovereignty in 2025 and Golden Tempo this year.

"We have stallions here by sires that are very classy, but when they are out of Bernardini mares they have an extra dose of class, of presence, and intelligence. You can see it in their demeanor," Fox said. "Bernardini is an enhancer of whatever positive traits are there and it works on many different levels."

Looking at the pedigrees just among the Classic contenders reveals many similar patterns and common ancestors.

Both Sovereignty and Magnitude are by Storm Cat-line sires, with Sovereignty by multiple leading sire Into Mischief  (a great-grandson of Storm Cat through Harlan's Holiday) and Magnitude by Not This Time  (a grandson of Storm Cat through Giant's Causeway). The Storm Cat line contributes an influence from Secretariat (Storm Cat's broodmare sire) that gets combined on the dam side where Secretariat is the broodmare sire of A.P. Indy. Magnitude is inbred 5x5 to Secretariat, while Sovereignty has Secretariat 6x5.

Inbreeding 4x4 to Fappiano is also shared in the dams of Sovereignty and Magnitude. Fappiano (a son of Mr. Prospector) is the sire of Quiet American, who is Bernardini's broodmare sire. Sovereignty's dam Crowned has Empire Maker as a broodmare sire and he is a grandson of Fappiano through Unbridled. Magnitude's dam, Rockadelic, has Unbridled's Song as a broodmare sire, who is another son of Unbridled.

Golden Tempo is by Curlin , who is a grandson of Mr. Prospector through Smart Strike and out of a Northern Dancer-line mare. This year's dual classic winner is inbred to Mr. Prospector (3x5) and Northern Dancer (5x5). Mr. Prospector is also the sire of Seeking the Gold, who is the sire of Golden Tempo's third dam Dancinginmydreams.

Seeking the Gold is another common influence in the pedigrees of Knightsbridge and Sovereignty. Knightsbridge is by Nyquist  and Seeking the Gold is the broodmare sire of his dam Seeking Gabrielle. Seeking the Gold is also the broodmare sire of Sovereignty's second dam Mushka.

Knightsbridge does not have any inbreeding but, in addition to Seeking the Gold, his pedigree features many of the same ancestors influencing Magnitude, Sovereignty, and Golden Tempo. His sire Nyquist is a son of Uncle Mo, whose sire line traces back to Caro through Indian Charlie and Ireland-bred In Excess. Magnitude's second dam, Octave, is inbred 3x3 to Caro as the broodmare sire of her grandsire Unbridled, and is the sire of her own broodmare sire Dr. Carter. Knightsbridge also gets dual influences from Secretariat because Seeking Gabrielle is a daughter of Forestry, who is a son of Storm Cat.

"Bernardini is very complementary with all the major sire lines out there and so we will long continue to feel the impact from him," Fox said.
