Embroidery landed her third grade 1 victory, stamped herself Japan's top female miler and earned a "Win and You're In" spot in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1T) with a "perfect race" in the Victoria Mile (G1T) May 17 at Tokyo Racecourse.
With Christophe Lemaire in the irons, the 4-year-old Admire Mars filly stalked the pace down the backstretch, advanced around rivals into the stretch and gained the lead with some 200 meters left. She drew off easily to win by 1 3/4 lengths as the solid favorite.
The astute Japanese punters got it right as the second- and third-favorites at the windows, Kamunyak and Queen's Walk, finished second and third, respectively. Embroidery completed the 1,600 meters in 1:30.09, .04 second off the course record, without much urging from Lemaire.
Lemaire, who tops Japan's jockey standings, won the race for a record fifth time, and secured his 100th career grade 1 win and 60th Japan Racing Association grade 1 victory.
"It was a perfect race," Lemaire said. "We were able to break smoothly, which allowed us to race in a good position. She responded really well on the uphill stretch and I was confident we would win again."
Embroidery, bred by Tenei Horse Park, Ltd., was produced by the Kurofune mare Rottenmeier. She won two of four starts at age 2 and started 2025 with her first graded stakes win, the Daily Hai Queen Stakes (G2T) at the same Tokyo Racecourse 1,600 meters.
Trainer Kazutomo Mori then challenged her with the Oka Sho (Japanese One Thousand Guineas, G1T), and she responded with her first top-level win, also at 1,600 meters. The Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks, G1T) at 2,400 meters (about 1 1/2 miles) was a bust as she finished ninth, but she followed that with a win in the Shuka Sho (G1T) in October at Kyoto Racecourse.
Her first overseas trip resulted in an 11th-place finish in the Hong Kong Mile (G1) in December but she returned to form in her 2026 debut, winning the Hanshin Himba (G2T) April 11 with Kamunyak second.
The Hong Kong experience is never easy, given the travel and the typical dominance of the local runners, and Lemaire cautioned it should not define Embroidery's future.
"She's a smart horse with a strong mentality and she's developing physically as well," he said. "She's truly a grade 1-caliber horse. I think she can compete both in Japan and overseas."
The field she vanquished in the Victoria Mile, in fact, included most of her likely rivals going forward locally. Kamunyak won the 2025 Yushun Himba. Queen's Walk was second in last year's Victoria Mile.
The race has produced some major stars. Past winners include Vodka (JPN), Japan's Horse of the Year in 2008 and 2009, who is honored with a statue in the paddock area; 2010 Horse of the Year Buena Vista, and 2018 and 2020 Horse of the Year Almond Eye.
Should her connections choose an international campaign for the filly, their options were significantly expanded by the Victoria Mile score. In addition to the Breeders' Cup invitation, the victory earned entry into the Prix Jacques le Marois (G1) in August in Deauville and the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (G1) in September in Paris.
