This column highlights the performances of 2- and 3-year-old maidens (the latter category only through June) with the potential for graded stakes success based on criteria such as a horse who has made no more than five starts and either sold for more than $500,000 at public auction, has siblings that are graded/group winners, or has dams that are graded/group winners. BloodHorse research shows maiden winners who meet these criteria are more likely to go on to be graded stakes winners.
Grand Yaupon, High Official, and Lifesong are the latest BloodHorse Maiden Watch Hot Prospects after their initial victories last week. The latter scored at Ellis Park, while the other two did so at Saratoga Race Course.
Grand Yaupon Brave in Scoring by a Head
Coming off a fourth-place finish in his debut last month at Churchill Downs, Grand Yaupon was a determined winner of the third race July 25 at Saratoga Race Course, denying runner-up Belzoni a debut victory when it looked like that rival might blow past in midstretch. But Grand Yaupon bravely repelled Belzoni by a head. He paid $6.46 to win as the favorite.
The winner raced 6 furlongs on a fast track in 1:11.69 under Jose Ortiz after racing three wide in a pressing position off fractions of :22.51 and :46.53. His final time, relative to the speed of the Saratoga track surface, earned him a 73 Equibase Speed Figure and a 75 Beyer Speed Figure.
Grand Yaupon, who races for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen and the estate of Mike McCarty, is a Maiden Watch qualifier by virtue of his sales price. McCarty bought him for $560,000 last year from the Hinkle Farms consignment to the 2025 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, making him the second-most-expensive Yaupon yearling sold at public auction last year.
Bred in Kentucky by Thomas Hinkle, Henry Hinkle, and Robert Kessinger out of the unraced Mineshaft mare Media Circus, Grand Yaupon is a half brother to Happymayleidy (Runhappy), who won the 2025 Clasico Accion de Gracias Stakes, a grade 1 race in Puerto Rico that rates as a listed stakes win under sales catalog standards.
Asmussen trained Yaupon to six wins from eight starts in 2020-21, capped by a victory in the 7-furlong Forego Stakes (G1) in 2021 at Saratoga in his final career start.

High Official The Boss in Debut
Showing a liking for turf racing, just like his graded stakes-winning dam Sweet Melania, High Official powered to a 2-length victory on the Saratoga grass in the opener July 26.
Fourth early, between 7-8 lengths off the early pace in the 1 1/16-mile race behind splits of :23.79 and :49.30, High Official kicked into gear under urging from Flavien Prat leaving the second turn and inhaled the leaders in the stretch, cruising past second-time starter Harbaugh in the closing sixteenth. He was clocked in 1:43.66 over firm ground, running an 83 ESF and a 69 Beyer.
Both High Official and Harbaugh are sons of Not This Time , one of North America's top stallions who is threatening to dethrone perennial general sire leader Into Mischief in 2026.
High Official, a homebred for Robert and Lawana Low, is the first foal to race for Sweet Melania, who won three graded stakes on turf, including the Jessamine Stakes (G2T) at Keeneland as a juvenile in 2019. She also showed in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1T) that year at Santa Anita Park.
Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher trains High Official, as he did Sweet Melania for the Lows. The colt seems a follow-up candidate for the Sept. 5 With Anticipation Stakes (G3T), contested over the same 1 1/16-mile distance at Saratoga.

Lifesong Hits All The Right Notes in Debut
With Ellis Park offering $100,000 maiden special weight purses for Kentucky-breds, not all the top maidens are in New York during the summer months. Case in point: WinStar Farm, CHC, and First Go Racing's Lifesong, who wore down longtime leader Arminius to score by three-quarters of a length in the seventh race there Sunday.
Arminius, a second-time starter, was able to break away from most of the field, but Lifesong, a son of Life Is Good , kept doggedly pursuing after him, extending his stride to catch the leader in the closing 100 yards. Lifesong galloped out enthusiastically.
The winner, bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm, raced 6 furlongs in 1:11.17 after chasing Arminius through fractions of :22.66, :45.71, and :58.02. That time registered an 83 Equibase Speed Figure and a 76 Beyer Speed Figure.
Lifesong is bred to stretch out. His dam, the Norm Casse-trained Hard Legacy, won the 2019 Regret Stakes (G3T) for Marylou Whitney Stables at 1 1/8 miles on turf, and Life Is Good was able to carry his speed up to 1 1/8 miles, becoming a multiple grade 1 winner at that distance on dirt. Life Is Good raced for WinStar Farm and CHC when initially trained by Bob Baffert and later by Pletcher.
Will Walden trains Lifesong, who was unveiled off a series of fast workouts at Churchill Downs.
