Miss Monica Tops Latest Maiden Watch Qualifiers

This column highlights the performances of 2- and 3-year-old maidens (the latter category only through June) with the potential for graded stakes success based on criteria such as a horse that has made no more than five starts and either sold for more than $500,000 at public auction, has siblings that are graded/group winners, or has dams that are graded/group winners. BloodHorse research shows maiden winners who meet these criteria are more likely to go on to be graded stakes winners. 

Miss Monica, Caribbean Life, and Embouteillage are BloodHorse Maiden Watch Hot Prospects after first-out victories in recent days. 

Pricey 2-year-Old Filly Miss Monica Flaunts Speed

Taking command shortly after the start, Mike Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman's Miss Monica dusted four rivals in a 6 1/2-furlong maiden special weight at Del Mar, pulling clear by 5 3/4 lengths over runner-up Well Versed. There was a gap of over 10 lengths back to third-place finisher Forewarn.

The winner, a 2-year-old filly by Early Voting  out of the winless American Pharoah mare Lipstikliesnlovers, sped 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:16.44 after setting comfortable fractions of :23.08 and :46.14. Her quick time earned her an 88 Equibase Speed Figure and an 87 Beyer Speed Figure.

The Bob Baffert trainee qualifies for Match Watch for having been an $850,000 purchase by bloodstock agent Donato Lanni by her owners during the final day of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale April 17. She had breezed a co-fastest quarter-mile in :20 2/5 during the under-tack show for consignor Jesse Hoppel.

"She was one that we really wanted," Lanni said at the sale. "Her work was phenomenal. She ran against a headwind that day, too. She galloped out good, but she was serious out there. We all loved her. The team loved her."

She is the second foal of Lipstikliesnlovers, who is out of the graded stakes winner Cherokee Queen. The filly hails from the family of grade 1 winner Domestic Product , who won the 2024 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course.

Miss Monica seems a logical candidate for the Sept. 5 Del Mar Debutante (G1) over 7 furlongs.

Caribbean Life Draws Clear at Ellis Park

CHC's homebred Caribbean Life also impressed in his first-out victory Aug. 8 at Ellis Park for trainer Will Walden.

The 2-year-old son of hot freshman sire Life Is Good  broke well under rider Jaime Torres, and pressed an opening fraction in the 7-furlong race of :22.64 before a narrow lead with a half-mile in :45.82. He then increased his advantage, ultimately crossing the wire 3 1/4 lengths in front. He was clocked in 1:23.30 for the distance, posting an 83 Equibase Speed Figure and 65 Beyer Speed Figure.

Already the ninth winner in his sire's first crop, Caribbean Life is out of the Arch mare Caribbean Babe, who also produced the group 3 winner Bold Discovery, winner of the 2024 Amethyst Stakes (G3) overseas at Leopardstown. Caribbean Life is her fourth foal.

Embouteillage Captures Turf Sprint 

Wertheimer and Frere's juvenile Embouteillage powered through the stretch to break her maiden on turf when debuting Aug. 5 at Saratoga Race Course for trainer Graham Motion. 

The 2-year-old daughter of elite British turf sire Kingman  broke in mid-pack under Hall of Famer John Velazquez, stalking front-runners Shinobu and Rockabye, with longshot Oh Come On to her outside.

Turning for home in the 5 1/2-furlong grass race after fractions of :21.84 and :45.06 posted by Shinobu, Oh Come On swung wide and began to fade, leaving a gap for Embouteillage to angle off the inside to take off after Rockabye, who had taken charge in early stretch.

Embouteillage closed with every stride to run down eventual runner-up Rockabye at the sixteenth pole, pulling away by 1 1/4 lengths over firm turf in 1:02.78, earning an Equibase Speed Figure of 81 and a Beyer Speed Figure of 71. 

A homebred for Wertheimer Et Frere, Embouteillage is out of the English Channel mare Mitchell Road, who won four black-type contests including the 2019 Gallorette Stakes (G3T) at Pimlico Race Course. A half sister to 2019 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Country House , Mitchell Road ran first or second in 14 of 18 starts and earned $619,893.

Motion is unsure of Embouteillage's optimal distance, but is "leading towards" stretching her out next out to race a mile in the Sept. 12 Natalma Stakes (G1T) over the sweeping E. P. Taylor Turf Course at Woodbine.

"I like the one turn, the timing is really good, and Johnny can ride her," Motion told New York Racing Association publicity.
