This column highlights the performances of 2- and 3-year-old maidens (the latter category only through June) with the potential for graded stakes success based on criteria such as a horse that has made no more than five starts and either sold for more than $500,000 at public auction, has siblings that are graded/group winners, or has dams that are graded/group winners. BloodHorse research shows maiden winners who meet these criteria are more likely to go on to be graded stakes winners.
Juveniles Inshallah and Q B Rocket—who cost a combined $4 million at auction—are BloodHorse Maiden Watch Hot Prospects after delivering on expectations with first-out victories Aug. 15.
Inshallah Runs to The Hype
By 2022 Horse of the Year Flightline out of a 2017 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) winner Bar of Gold, Inshallah topped his auction at Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale this spring, selling for $2.1 million to KAS Stables via bloodstock agent Pedro Lanz. There, the colt wowed observers with his looks, athleticism, and performance under tack as part of the Sequel Bloodstock consignment.
Sent west to Flightline's trainer, John Sadler, the colt trained smartly in California ahead of Saturday's unveiling at Del Mar.
Bet down to 7-10 favoritism against seven other maidens, he dashed away from his rivals over the opening furlongs, sprinting an initial quarter mile in :21.52 and opening up a 5-length advantage 3 furlongs into the 5 1/2-furlong race. Though runner-up Icanthelpmyself cut into his lead late after chasing him throughout, Inshallah still comfortably triumphed, finishing 1 1/2 lengths in front and timed in a 1:03.11 for the distance under Joel Rosario. That time earned him a 90 Equibase Speed Figure and an equivalent Beyer Speed Figure.
It will be interesting to see whether Sadler can coax the chestnut into conserving his speed and energy, as he did with Flightline. That may prove key if the colt is to be successful beyond sprint distances.
How Inshallah exits the race and trains in the coming weeks will dictate whether Sadler brings him back on 22 days' rest into the Sept. 6 Del Mar Futurity (G1). The grade 1 status of that race and a sprint distance of 7 furlongs offer obvious appeal.
Bred in New York by Chester and Mary Broman, the colt is related to three other winners, including Coinage (Tapit ), who captured the 2021 With Anticipation Stakes (G3T) at Saratoga Race Course over 1 1/16 miles on grass.

Q B Rocket Takes Flight at Saratoga
A few hours before Inshallah scored on debut, Spendthrift Farm and Frank Fletcher Racing Operations' Q B Rocket scored in front-running fashion at Saratoga Race Course in a 6-furlong maiden dash for 2-year-olds.
The 6-5 favorite was pressured on the lead through splits of :22.66 and :45.88. He spurted clear in midstretch, and won by 1 3/4 lengths under a hand ride from Junior Alvarado. He clocked 1:10.70 for the distance, earning the Brad Cox trainee an 83 Equibase Speed Figure and an 80 Beyer Speed Figure.

The Kentucky-bred Gun Runner colt was a $1.9 million purchase from the Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa consignment to the 2025 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, where Spendthrift Farm general manager Ned Toffey praised the colt.
"We had a number of people approach us wanting to partner on it," he said. "What's not to like, right?"
The dark bay/brown colt was bred by GRS and Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert out of the stakes-placed Quality Road winner Ginja. Baffert trained the mare, who was owned by his wife, Jill.
Ginja is a half sister to grade 1-placed Top Decile, who ran second in both the 2014 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) and Alcibiades Stakes (G1). Top Decile went on to produce Japanese 3-year-old champion colt Danon Decile.
