A pair of scratches left the $598,000 Spinster Stakes (G1) with a field of three, but it was an extreme example of quality over quantity.
With nowhere to hide and no excuses to be had in their final prep toward potential starts in the Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) Oct. 31, three grade 1 winners were set for battle. When they left the gate, two of them were multiple grade 1 winners. When they crossed the finish line 1:50.60 later, all three of them were.
Klaravich Stable's Fully Subscribed solidified her place as one of the favorites in the $2 million Distaff, and earned her second win as part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win And You're In after taking the Aug. 29 Personal Ensign Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course by a dominant 9 3/4 lengths. The riches of victory in the series include an automatic, fees-paid berth.
She gained extra momentum ahead of that goal by now having success over the Breeders' Cup's host track over the same 1 1/8-mile distance, and according to Chad Brown's near 20-year assistant Jose Hernandez, she really likes Lexington.
"She settled down; so quiet, so good here, even to saddle," Hernandez said in the winner's circle. "At Saratoga, she was a little nervous to saddle, here she was quiet. ... She's been doing great here."
Her two rivals were West Point Thoroughbreds' Counting Stars, the leader of the 3-year-old filly division taking on older horses for the first time, and Godolphin's Immersive, 2024's champion 2-year-old filly who added a Fleur de Lis Stakes (G2) win this summer.
Yet, despite that evident talent, Fully Subscribed was the odds-on favorite with Flavien Prat aboard and ran to it. Immersive and jockey Jose Ortiz set comfortable fractions of :24.19, :48.43, and 1:13.00 while Fully Subscribed kept between 1-2 lengths off in her pursuit. Meanwhile, Irad Ortiz Jr. found himself third aboard Counting Stars as she carried four pounds less than her rivals.
Prat was on the attack midway around the far turn and took command as they reached the quarter pole. Ortiz Jr. also got Counting Stars in gear as they passed by Immersive. However, she could never truly threaten Full Subscribed as Prat balanced letting his Tiz the Law filly extend enough to secure a grade 1 while saving enough for four weeks from now.
By the end, she was 3 1/4 lengths clear of Counting Stars with Immersive another 6 lengths back in third. Fully Subscribed paid $3.08 to win.
"It can be a cat and mouse game, but it was a fair race," Prat said of the three-horse field. "She's very professional, she has a ton of class, and she did very well."

Ending her 3-year-old campaign on a pair of graded wins, Fully Subscribed started her season with two runner-up finishes in grade 1 company, defeated a length by Shred the Gnar in the La Troienne Stakes (G1) at Churchill Downs before finishing well in the wake, 12 3/4 lengths, of Nitrogen in the Ogden Phipps Stakes (G1) at Saratoga.
However, she has shown signs of continuing to develop into a leader of the division that has many believing she will be more up to the task of Nitrogen in the Breeders' Cup on the heels of three straight wins.
"She has improved every race, I thought. Every race she was getting better," Prat said. "First time when she came back at Churchill she had a tough race, we had a tough draw. We were a bit disappointed the next race (Ogden Phipps), but after that she kept improving."
Fully Subscribed now holds a record of 6-3-1 record from 10 starts for earnings of $1,441,800. Bred in Kentucky by Payson Stud, she is out of the winning Candy Ride mare Sweetbaby. A Keeneland September Yearling Sale graduate, she was purchased by Klaravich for $300,000 at the 2024 Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training from the Caliente Thoroughbreds consignment.
Alongside Eunomia, she is one of two North American grade 1 winners this year for Tiz the Law, who stood the 2026 season at Ashford Stud for $40,000. The 2020 Belmont Stakes (G1) winner is also represented by six Chilean grade 1 winners this season.
It seems more and more likely that the Breeders' Cup Distaff will be one by an older filly or mare as Hall of Famer Mark Casse said after the race that Counting Stars will head toward a break after an eight-race campaign that included two grade 1 wins and three additional grade 1 placings.
"We talked about two different scenarios, Irad and I," Casse said of the race. "If she broke running, he was going to go. But if not, he's going to get stuck, because we knew there was no way Flavien was going to let him out. So you'll see down the backside, he took her back so he could get outside Flavien.
"I'm proud of her, she ran great. We'll send her home now for a rest and try to win the Breeders' Cup next year."
Other sophomore filly stars like Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner Always a Runner and Alabama Stakes (G1) winner My Gun's Loaded have also completed their season ahead of the Breeders' Cup, and connections of Cotillion Stakes (G1) winner Bodacious Bay are on the fence and will most likely look toward the 2027 Distaff.
