Some six years ago, Chad Brown trained a grade 2-placed filly named Indian Pride for former Kentucky Gov. Brereton C. Jones.
When the filly was retired to become a broodmare after winning the 2020 Shine Again Stakes, Brown was told if Indian Pride produced a good-looking filly, he would train her.
That foal turned out to the very good-looking Libby Lloyd, a 2-year-old homebred daughter of Into Mischief , who notched an ultra-impressive 10-length victory in her career debut Aug. 15 at Saratoga Race Course.
The promising filly is owned by Bret Jones, son of the late Brereton C. Jones, who named the filly after his mother, Elizabeth "Libby" Lloyd Jones, who will turn 83 this year.
"She looked super. She trained with a lot of promise and we're excited to get her started," Brown said. "It means a lot to me, having trained her mother. She's named for Bret's mother and it's a family affair. They have raised such sound, talented horses at Airdrie for years. It's wonderful for the family to have a talented filly out of this mare and, of course, to have it named after Libby."
Brown said the Sept. 5 Spinaway Stakes (G1) was probably coming up too quickly for the juvenile filly, who will likely be pointed to the Oct. 3 Frizette Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park.
Libby Lloyd is the third foal from Indian Pride and she's a half sister to the stakes-winning Publisher.
The field of five also included Shadwell Stable's Tumoohaat, the first foal from the two-time champion filly Malathaat, who showed some early speed before fading to fifth, a little more than 28 lengths behind.
