Race Track Industry Program/James S. Wood

The show: Paddock Pulse, Aug. 18

The speaker: National Thoroughbred Racing Association president Tom Rooney

The topic: When Congress returns from recess later this month there's an amendment, the SAFE Act, that will be considered for an upcoming transportation and infrastructure bill that would ban the transport of horses for slaughter across country lines

The quote: "Morally and ethically I believe that we have a responsibility, if we're going to breed these horses to race and for our entertainment and for our sport, that we have a responsibility to take care of them after they're done racing."

The show: BH Monday, Aug. 17

The speaker: Trainer Josie Carroll

The topic: On sending out Gainesway Stable and Andrew Rosen's Luster to victory in the King's Plate Stakes Aug. 15 at Woodbine, making her the 40th filly to win the Canadian classic

The quote: "Many times it's been set up that way where the best horse has been a filly. The mile-and-a-quarter distance is always a consideration. Fillies tend to mature faster than the colts. I really am not sure of why, but fillies have been very, very competitive in this race. Even in the years they haven't won it, they've certainly proven themselves in it."

The show: The Owner's Box, Aug. 13

The speaker: Thoroughbred owner and Breeders' Cup Betting Challenge winner Bob Hansen

The topic: The effects of significant handle from computer-assisted wagering on pari-mutuel pools

The quotes: "I do think the CAWs are a problem. I used to come from a world in the pari-mutuel environment that I could look around the track and think, 'I just have to beat these people.' I can't do that anymore. ... I think long term, (CAWs) are going to slowly whittle away the retail bettor.

"I know they need the handle from these CAWs. I get it. But we have to create a way where the retail bettor isn't just basically funding these CAWs."
